Logo após a morte da mãe, Aretha começou a cantar solos na Igreja Batista New Bethel, estreando com o hino "Jesus, Be a Fence Around Me". Aos 12 anos, seu pai assumiu o papel de seu empresário e passou a levá-la em suas turnês de caravanas gospel por várias igrejas. C. L. Em novembro de 1966, ao término de seu contrato com a Columbia, Aretha devia dinheiro à gravadora porque as vendas de seus discos não haviam coberto os adiantamentos. O produtor Jerry Wexler convenceu-a a assinar com a Atlantic Records. Em 2020, uma gravação inédita de sua performance de "Never Gonna Break My Faith" foi lançada em comemoração ao Juneteenth, alcançando o 1º lugar na parada gospel da Billboard e garantindo a Aretha a marca de ter liderado paradas em todas as décadas desde os anos 1960.

Quando a ativista Angela Davis foi presa em 1970, Franklin declarou publicamente à revista Jet:
"Angela Davis deve ser libertada... Os negros serão livres. Eu já estive presa e sei que você precisa perturbar a paz quando não consegue paz. Vou vê-la livre se houver justiça em nossos tribunais, não porque eu acredite no comunismo, mas porque ela é uma mulher negra e quer liberdade para os negros."
Suas interpretações de "Respect" e "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" transformaram-se em hinos globais do feminismo e da igualdade racial. Franklin também foi uma fervorosa defensora das causas dos povos indígenas e das Primeiras Nações, apoiando discretamente diversos movimentos de preservação de seus direitos culturais. Em 2017, recusou o convite para se apresentar na posse do presidente Donald Trump como forma de protesto.
Vida pessoal.
Aretha mudou-se de Detroit para Nova York na década de 1960 e, em meados dos anos 1970, transferiu residência para Los Angeles, estabelecendo-se no bairro de Encino. Em 1982, retornou para a região de Detroit (no subúrbio de Bloomfield Hills) para cuidar de seu pai doente e ficar próxima de seus irmãos, onde manteve sua residência principal até os últimos anos de vida.
