O Axe foi mais uma banda de rock n´roll frequentadora do clube dos injustiçados. É a velha história dos músicos talentosos que fazem boa música mas não emplacam. Talvez por não possuírem lindos olhos azuis ou não usarem visuais ultrajantes, quem sabe?
O Axe começou como outra banda os músicos tocavam sob o nome de Babyface na década de 70. Eram Edgar Riley (vocais), Bobby Barth (guitarra e vocais), Mike Turpin (baixo) e Bob Miles (bateria). Após um tempo fazendo shows com o nome de Babyface, descobriram que existia um outro Babyface na América que tinham direitos autorais sobre o nome. Para não terem problemas resolveram mudar o nome para Axe .
Já era o final dos anos 70, e neste período eles já estavam recrutando um novo guitarrista, Mike Osbourne (apesar do nome, não existe nenhum parentesco oficial com Ozzy). Mike vinha para somar, e a banda passava a ter dois guitarristas. Tempos depois, Bob acabou sendo substituído por Teddy Mueller que tinha uma técnica mais refinada.
O primeiro disco veio em 79 e levou o "criativo" nome de "Axe". Este primeiro álbum não trouxe o reconhecimento que a banda merecia. Poucas pessoas compraram o disco e não muitas frequentavam os shows.
O segundo sairia um ano depois, novamente pela MCA, que estava acreditando que apesar da banda não ter um frontman carismático e bonitão ou um guitar hero sexy e ousado, poderia aparecer como uma revelação do rock americano. "Living on the Edge" foi editado e deu um novo ânimo na banda, já que uma revista especializada havia tecido vários elogios ao disco.
Em 81, eles lançariam o último disco com este line-up; Mike Osbourne morreria em um acidente de carro na época em que a banda estava começando a colher os frutos do seu árduo trabalho.
O disco "Offering" (81) se saiu muito bem, em termos de venda e de crítica também. Só por curiosidade, vale mencionar que este trabalho traz na faixa de abertura uma canção ("Rock n´roll Party in the Streets") que lembra muito "Runaway" do Bon Jovi (que seria lançada anos depois).
Após a morte de Mike, a banda congelou por toda a década, para retomar as atividades em 89, com o baterista do UFO. Resenha: Allan Jones (Whiplash).
