Riley Ben King, mais conhecido como B. B. King (Itta Bena, 16 de setembro de 1925 – Las Vegas, 14 de maio de 2015), foi um guitarrista de blues, compositor e cantor americano. O "B. B." em seu nome significa Blues Boy, seu pseudônimo como locutor na rádio WDIA. Foi considerado, ao lado de Eric Clapton e Jimi Hendrix, um dos melhores guitarristas do mundo pela revista norte-americana Rolling Stone. Ao longo da sua carreira, B. B. King foi distinguido com 15 prêmios Grammy, tendo sido o criador de um estilo musical único que o consagrou como um dos músicos mais respeitados e influentes do blues, recebendo o epíteto de "Rei do Blues".

Biografia.
Riley Ben King nasceu em uma fazenda de algodão em 16 de setembro de 1925, em Itta Bena, perto de Indianola, no Mississippi, Estados Unidos.
Teve uma infância difícil: aos 9 anos, vivia sozinho e colhia algodão para se sustentar. Começou a tocar a troco de algumas moedas na esquina da Second Street, chegando a se apresentar em quatro cidades diferentes aos sábados à noite.
Em 1947, partiu para Memphis, no Tennessee, apenas com sua guitarra e US$ 2,50. Como pretendia seguir a carreira musical, a cidade de Memphis — onde se cruzavam todos os músicos importantes do sul dos Estados Unidos — sustentava uma vasta e competitiva comunidade musical, na qual todos os estilos da música negra eram ouvidos.
Nomes como Django Reinhardt, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Lonnie Johnson, Charlie Christian e T-Bone Walker tornaram-se ídolos de B. B. King.
"Num sábado à noite, ouvi uma guitarra elétrica que não estava a tocar música gospel negra. Era T-Bone interpretando 'Stormy Monday', e foi o som mais belo que alguma vez ouvi na minha vida", recorda B. B. King. "Foi o que realmente me levou a querer tocar blues."
A primeira grande oportunidade de sua carreira surgiu em 1948, quando atuou no programa de rádio de Sonny Boy Williamson, na estação KWEM, de Memphis. Sucederam-se apresentações fixas no Grill da Sixteenth Avenue e, mais tarde, um anúncio publicitário de 10 minutos na estação radiofônica WDIA, com uma equipe e direção exclusivamente negras. O programa "King’s Sport", patrocinado por um tônico, tornou-se tão popular que teve seu tempo de transmissão ampliado, transformando-se no "Sepia Swing Club".
King precisou de um nome artístico para a rádio. Inicialmente apelidado de "Beale Blues Boy" em referência à música "Beale Street Blues", o termo foi abreviado para "Blues Boy King" e, eventualmente, para B. B. King. Por mera coincidência, o seu sobrenome, King, já incluía a inicial "B", que não correspondia a nenhuma abreviatura.
Pouco depois do seu êxito "Three O'Clock Blues", em 1951, B. B. King começou a fazer turnês nacionais sem parar, atingindo uma média de 275 concertos por ano. Só em 1956, B. B. King e sua banda realizaram 342 concertos! Passando por pequenos cafés, teatros de gueto, salões de dança, clubes de jazz e de rock, grandes hotéis e recintos para concertos sinfônicos até os mais prestigiados palcos nacionais e internacionais, B. B. King depressa se tornou o mais conceituado músico de blues dos últimos 40 anos, desenvolvendo um dos estilos de guitarra mais prontamente identificáveis a nível mundial.
O seu estilo serviu de inspiração para muitos guitarristas de rock. Mike Bloomfield, Albert Collins, Buddy Guy, Freddie King, Jimi Hendrix, Otis Rush, Johnny Winter, Albert King, Eric Clapton, George Harrison e Jeff Beck foram apenas alguns dos que adotaram sua técnica como modelo. Ele era considerado o melhor guitarrista do mundo pelo próprio Hendrix.
Em 1969, B. B. King foi escolhido para abrir 18 concertos dos Rolling Stones. Em 1970, fez uma turnê por Uganda, Nigéria e Libéria com o patrocínio do governo dos Estados Unidos.
Começou a participar da maioria dos festivais de jazz em todo o mundo, incluindo o Newport Jazz Festival e o Kool Jazz Festival de Nova York, e sua presença tornou-se regular no circuito de universidades e colégios.
Em 1989, fez uma turnê de três meses pela Austrália, Nova Zelândia, Japão, França, Alemanha Ocidental, Países Baixos e Irlanda como convidado especial dos U2, participando igualmente no álbum Rattle and Hum do grupo, na faixa "When Love Comes to Town".
Em 26 de julho de 1996, aproveitando ter um concerto agendado em Stuttgart, deslocou-se de propósito de avião até à base aérea de Tuzla para atuar perante tropas da Suécia, Rússia, Bélgica e Estados Unidos, estacionadas na Bósnia e Herzegovina em um esforço conjunto de manutenção da paz. No dia seguinte, voou para a base aérea de Kapsjak para uma nova apresentação junto às tropas norte-americanas. B. B. King confessou: "Foi emocionante atuar para estes homens e mulheres. Apreciamo-los e queremos que eles saibam que têm o nosso total apoio na sua árdua tarefa de manutenção da paz."
B. B. King encerrou 1996 com uma turnê pela América Latina, passando por México, Brasil, Chile, Argentina, Uruguai e, pela primeira vez, Peru e Paraguai. O "Rei do Blues" somou atuações em mais de 90 países ao longo da carreira.
Ao longo dos anos, foi agraciado com diversos prêmios Grammy: melhor desempenho vocal masculino de Rhythm & Blues, em 1970, com "The Thrill is Gone"; melhor gravação étnica ou tradicional, em 1981, com "There Must Be a Better World Somewhere"; melhor gravação de blues tradicional, em 1983, com "Blues'N Jazz"; e em 1985, com "My Guitar Sings the Blues". Em 1970, o Mississippi State Penitentiary (ou a comunidade de Indianola) concedeu-lhe o reconhecimento de melhor capa de álbum. Além disso, a Gibson Guitar Co. nomeou-o "Embaixador das Guitarras Gibson no Mundo".
Últimos dias e morte.
No início de abril de 2015, B. B. King foi internado após sofrer de desidratação causada por diabetes tipo 2, doença com a qual convivia há mais de vinte anos. Ele tinha uma turnê programada para 2015, mas precisou cancelá-la devido ao agravamento do quadro de saúde. Durante uma apresentação em Chicago, em outubro anterior, o músico já havia passado mal no palco em decorrência de desidratação e esgotamento, restando apenas oito apresentações para concluir a temporada.
King morreu em 14 de maio de 2015, enquanto dormia, aos 89 anos. O médico do músico, Darin Brimhall, e o legista John Fudenberg declararam que o termo técnico para a causa primária da morte foi demência vascular. Brimhall explicou que os AVCs sofridos por B. B. King resultaram da redução do fluxo sanguíneo provocada pela diabetes crônica.
Houve também suspeitas levantadas por duas de suas filhas de que o músico teria sido envenenado por seu agente, o que levou a um pedido de investigação formal. No entanto, nada foi comprovado: a autópsia concluiu que a morte ocorreu por causas naturais, confirmando que ele sofria de diabetes, mal de Alzheimer e problemas cardíacos.
Guitarras.
Uma das maiores marcas registradas de King era chamar suas guitarras de "Lucille" — uma tradição iniciada na década de 1950. No inverno de 1949, King se apresentou em um salão de dança em Twist, no Arkansas. Com o intuito de aquecer o ambiente, acendeu-se um barril meio cheio de querosene no centro do salão, uma prática comum na época. Durante o show, dois homens começaram a brigar e entornaram o barril, espalhando chamas por todo o espaço.
Durante a evacuação, já fora do estabelecimento, King apercebeu-se de que havia deixado sua guitarra de 30 dólares dentro do edifício em chamas. Voltou para reaver sua Gibson acústica, escapando por um triz. Duas pessoas morreram no incêndio. No dia seguinte, soube que a briga entre os dois homens havia começado por causa de uma mulher chamada Lucille. A partir de então, passou a batizar todas as suas guitarras com esse nome, para "se lembrar de nunca brigar por uma mulher e nunca mais entrar em um bar em chamas."
Inicialmente, King utilizava uma Fender Telecaster. Posteriormente, passou a usar uma Gibson ES-335, modelo que mais tarde foi substituído por sua versão personalizada, a B. B. King Lucille (baseada na ES-345). Em 19 de dezembro de 1997, apresentou Lucille ao Papa João Paulo II em um concerto no Vaticano. Em 5 de novembro de 2000, doou uma cópia autografada da guitarra para o Museu Nacional de Música dos Estados Unidos.
Legado, honras e prêmios.
Foi amplamente aclamado como um dos maiores guitarristas de todos os tempos pela revista norte-americana Rolling Stone.
Em 15 de dezembro de 2006, o presidente americano George W. Bush premiou King com a Medalha Presidencial da Liberdade.
Em 2004, recebeu o título de Doutor Honoris Causa (Ph.D. honorário) pela Universidade do Mississippi, e o Conservatório Real Sueco o galardoou com o Prêmio de Música Popular por suas contribuições expressivas ao blues.
Foi agraciado com a Medalha Nacional de Artes em 1990, nos Estados Unidos.
