Barclay James Harvest é uma banda inglesa de rock progressivo que após uma separação em 1998, agora existe como duas bandas sucessoras. A banda foi fundada em Oldham no mês de setembro de 1966 pelo baixista e vocalista Les Holroyd, o guitarrista e vocalista John Lees, o baterista e percussionista Mel Pritchard e o tecladista e vocalista Stuart "Woolly" Wolstenholme.
Após assinarem com a gravadora Parlophone da EMI no Reino Unido para um single no início de 1968, intitulado Early Morning / Mr. Sunshine, eles se mudaram para a gravadora Harvest, que tinha uma inclinação mais progressiva. O nome da banda, de acordo com o The International Barclay James Harvest Fan Club, não significa nada em específico. Tendo esgotado outras possibilidades, cada um dos membros da banda escreveu palavras isoladas em pedaços de papel que foram sorteados de um chapéu, um a um. Todas foram rejeitadas até restarem apenas três: James, um homem que costumava cantar com a banda, Harvest, porque eles moravam em uma fazenda e Barclay, em referência ao banco Barclays, porque eles aspiravam ganhar dinheiro. Essas palavras foram então reorganizadas para se chegar ao nome que soava melhor: Barclay James Harvest.
O álbum de estreia homônimo da banda contou com o acompanhamento de uma orquestra organizada por Robert John Godfrey. Foi lançado em 1970 e foi amplamente divulgado pelos músicos e pela gravadora como a próxima grande novidade do rock orquestral, mas recebeu críticas extremamente negativas e teve vendas fracas. O segundo álbum, Once Again foi seguido por uma turnê com uma orquestra completa sob a direção de Godfrey. Godfrey deixou a banda devido a problemas de composição em Mocking Bird, uma das faixas mais populares do grupo, então Martyn Ford foi contratado para supervisionar o trabalho orquestral do terceiro álbum, Barclay James Harvest And Other Short Stories. Anos depois, Godfrey entrou com um processo alegando que lhe eram devidos créditos de composição e royalties correspondentes em várias músicas do Barclay James Harvest. Com o lançamento do quarto álbum, Baby James Harvest em 1972, a pressão das turnês começou afetar a banda.
Após este álbum, eles deixaram a EMI, mudaram a gestão para Harvey Lisberg e assinaram com a Polydor, a mudança resultou imediatamente em maiores vendas. O próximo álbum, Everyone Is Everybody Else de 1974, foi votado em 13º lugar pelos ouvintes na lista dos 100 melhores álbuns de todos os tempos da Radio Caroline em 1977. A banda fez uma sessão na BBC Radio 1 em 1974 para John Peel. Alan Freeman, no entanto, seria o principal defensor da banda na estação nos anos 1970 e novamente quando retornou de 1989 a 1993. O álbum duplo ao vivo, Barclay James Harvest Live, que se seguiu no final de 1974, foi o primeiro que entrou nas paradas do Reino Unido, alcançando o 40º lugar. Time Honoured Ghosts de 1975, gravado nos EUA, veio em seguida e este também entrou nas paradas do Reino Unido alcançando o 32º lugar. Octoberon veio em 1976 e alcançou o 19º lugar no Reino Unido. Eles entraram no mercado mainstream da Europa continental com seu álbum de 1977, Gone To Earth, que continha a música Poor Man's Moody Blues, uma homenagem a música do Moody Blues, Nights in White Satin.
Wolstenholme saiu em 1979, após o álbum XII de 1978, ao começar a sofrer de depressão clínica. Ele seguiu uma breve carreira solo a frente da banda Maestoso, antes de se aposentar da indústria musical para se dedicar a agricultura. Permaneceu inativo durante os anos 80, até retornar a John Lees quando o BJH essencialmente se dividiu em dois.
Os três membros restantes continuaram. Em agosto de 1980, fizeram um show gratuito em frente ao Reichstag, em Berlim Ocidental, com um público estimado em 250.000 pessoas. Foi a primeira banda de rock ocidental a se apresentar em um show ao ar livre na Alemanha Oriental, tocando no Parque Treptower, em Berlim Oriental, em 14 de julho de 1987, para um público de mais de 170.000 pessoas. A banda continuou como um trio com músicos convidados regulares até 1998. Um álbum, Welcome To The Show, produzido em 1990, foi lançado sob o nome abreviado BJH, no entanto, devido a críticas dos fãs, o nome completo foi restaurado, embora com a inclusão da sigla BJH.
Em 1998, divergências musicais entre os membros do BJH levaram a divisão da banda em dois grupos distintos, cada um mantendo Barclay James Harvest em seu nome. John Lees lançou um álbum mesclando músicas novas e clássicos da banda, intitulado Nexus, sob o nome de Barclay James Harvest Through The Eyes Of John Lees. Woolly Wolstenholme tocou e compôs para essa banda. Les Holroyd e Mel Pritchard se uniram para gravar sob o nome de Barclay James Harvest Featuring Les Holroyd.
Mel Pritchard morreu subitamente de um ataque cardíaco no início de 2004. Woolly Wolstenholme tirou a própria vida em dezembro de 2010, aparentemente após anos lutando contra a depressão.
