Sir George Albert Shearing (13 de agosto de 1919 - 14 de fevereiro de 2011) foi um pianista de jazz britânico que liderou por muitos anos um popular grupo de jazz que gravou para a Discovery Records, MGM Records e Capitol Records. Shearing foi o compositor de mais de 300 canções, incluindo os standards de jazz, Lullaby of Birdland e Conception, teve vários álbuns nas paradas da Billboard durante as décadas de 1950, 1960, 1980 e 1990.
Vida pregressa.
Nascido em Battersea, Londres, Shearing era o mais novo de nove filhos. Ele nasceu cego, filho de pais da classe trabalhadora, seu pai entregava carvão e sua mãe limpava trens de noite. Ele começou aprender piano aos três anos de idade e iniciou o treinamento formal na Linden Lodge School for the Blind, onde passou quatro anos.
Foram oferecidas várias bolsas de estudo para Shearing, mas ele optou por atuar num pub local, o Mason's Arms em Lambeth, tocando piano e acordeão. Durante esse período, se juntou a uma banda composta inteiramente por cegos, a Claude Bampton's Blind Orchestra (Orquestra de Cegos de Claude Bampton) e foi influenciado pelos discos de Teddy Wilson e Fats Waller. Shearing fez a sua primeira transmissão de rádio na BBC durante esse período, depois de se ter tornado amigo de Leonard Feather, com quem começou gravar em 1937.
Em 1940, Shearing se juntou a popular banda de Harry Parry. Por volta de 1942, foi recrutado por Stéphane Grappelli (que residia em Londres durante a segunda guerra mundial) para integrar sua banda, que se apresentou no restaurante Hatchets em Piccadilly nos primeiros anos da guerra e posteriormente, excursionou como, The Grappelly Swingtette, a partir de 1943. Shearing venceu seis votações consecutivas de Melhor Pianista da Melody Maker a partir dessa época. Nessa época, ele também era membro da banda Saxes 'n' Sevens de George Evans.
Mudança para os Estados Unidos.
Shearing se mudou para os Estados Unidos, onde seu estilo harmonicamente complexo, que misturava swing, bebop e influências da música clássica moderna, ganhou popularidade. Uma de suas primeiras apresentações foi no Hickory House. Ele se apresentou com o Oscar Pettiford Trio e liderou um quarteto de jazz com Buddy DeFranco, o que gerou problemas contratuais, já que Shearing tinha contrato com a MGM e DeFranco com a Capitol Records.
Em 1949, ele formou o seu primeiro quinteto: George Shearing Quintet, com os músicos, Margie Hyams (vibrafone), Chuck Wayne (guitarra), posteriormente substituído por Toots Thielemans (creditado como John Tillman), John Levy (baixo) e Denzil Best (bateria). Essa formação gravou para a Discovery, Savoy e MGM, incluindo o popular single, September in the Rain, que vendeu mais de 900.000 cópias somente nos Estados Unidos, com vendas globais superiores a um milhão. Shearing disse sobre esse sucesso que foi tão acidental quanto possível. Nessa época, o romancista Jack Kerouac o ouviu tocar no Birdland e posteriormente descreveu a apresentação em seu romance de 1957, On the Road, como: Seus grandes dias de 1949, antes de se tornar cool e comercial.
O interesse de Shearing pela música clássica resultou em algumas apresentações com orquestras de concerto nas décadas de 1950 e 1960 e seus solos frequentemente se inspiravam na música de Satie, Delius e Debussy. Ele ficou conhecido por uma técnica pianística chamada: O Som de Shearing ou Afinação de Shearing, um tipo de acorde em bloco de melodia dupla, com uma quinta parte adicional que dobra a melodia uma oitava abaixo. Com o piano tocando essas cinco vozes, Shearing dobrava a voz superior com o vibrafone e a voz inferior com o violão para criar seu som característico. Essa técnica de piano também é conhecida como "mãos travadas" e o tecladista de jazz Milt Buckner é geralmente creditado como seu inventor. Na fase final de sua carreira, Shearing tocou com uma técnica de piano mais convencional, mantendo seu estilo improvisação característico.
Em 1956, Shearing se naturalizou cidadão dos Estados Unidos. Ele continuou tocando com seu quinteto, com músicos adicionais ao longo dos anos e gravou com a Capitol até 1969. Ele criou seu próprio selo, Sheba, que durou alguns anos. Junto com dezenas de estrelas da música de sua época, Shearing apareceu no programa The Pat Boone Chevy Showroom da ABC em 1959. Em 1953, ele havia aparecido no reality show da mesma emissora, The Comeback Story, no qual discutiu como lidar com a cegueira.
Carreira posterior.
Em 1970, ele começou eliminar gradualmente seu quinteto, agora previsível e dissolveu o grupo em 1978. Um de seus álbuns mais notáveis durante esse período foi The Reunion de 1976, feito em colaboração com o baixista Andy Simpkins, o baterista Rusty Jones e com Stéphane Grappelli, o violinista com quem ele havia estreado como sideman décadas antes.
Mais tarde, Shearing tocou em trio, como solista e cada vez mais em duo. Entre suas colaborações, se destacam trabalhos com os Montgomery Brothers, Marian McPartland, Brian Q. Torff, Jim Hall, Hank Jones, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen e Kenny Davern. Em 1979, Shearing assinou com a Concord Records e gravou para a gravadora com Mel Tormé. Essa colaboração rendeu a Shearing e Tormé dois Grammys, um em 1983 e outro em 1984.
Shearing se manteve em forma e ativo até seus últimos anos e continuou se apresentando, mesmo depois de ser homenageado com o Prêmio Ivor Novello de Conjunto da Obra em 1993. Ele nunca se esqueceu de seu país natal e, em seus últimos anos, dividia seu tempo entre Nova York e Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire, onde comprou uma casa com sua segunda esposa, a cantora Ellie Geffert. Isso lhe deu a oportunidade de fazer turnês pelo Reino Unido, dando concertos, muitas vezes com Tormé, acompanhado pela BBC Big Band. Ele foi nomeado Oficial da Ordem do Império Britânico (OBE) em 1996. Em 2007, foi condecorado cavaleiro. "Então", observou ele mais tarde, "o pobre garoto cego de Battersea se tornou Sir George Shearing. Isso sim é um conto de fadas que se tornou realidade."
Ele foi tema do programa This Is Your Life em 1992, quando foi surpreendido por Michael Aspel enquanto se apresentava no Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club.
Em 2004, ele lançou suas memórias, Lullaby of Birdland, que foram acompanhadas por um álbum duplo, autobiografia musical, Lullabies of Birdland. Pouco depois, ele sofreu uma queda em casa e se aposentou das apresentações regulares.
Em 14 de fevereiro de 2011, Shearing morreu de insuficiência cardíaca aos 91 anos.
Em outubro de 2011, Derek Paravicini e o vocalista de jazz Frank Holder realizaram um concerto em homenagem as gravações de Shearing. Ann Odell transcreveu as gravações e ensinou as partes a Paravicini, além de ser a diretora musical dos concertos. Lady Shearing também apoiou o espetáculo, enviando uma carta para ser lida antes da apresentação no Watermill Jazz Club.
Vida pessoal.
Shearing foi casado com Trixie Bayes de 1941 até 1973, com quem teve sua única filha, Wendy. Dois anos após o divórcio, se casou com sua segunda esposa, a cantora Ellie Geffert.
