John McLaughlin (nascido em 4 de janeiro de 1942), também conhecido anteriormente como Mahavishnu, é um guitarrista, líder de banda e compositor inglês. Pioneiro do jazz fusion, sua música combina elementos de jazz com rock, world music, música clássica ocidental, flamenco e blues. Depois de contribuir para vários grupos britânicos importantes do início da década de 1960, McLaughlin lançou Extrapolation, seu primeiro álbum como líder de banda em 1969.
Em seguida, se mudou para os EUA, onde tocou com o grupo Lifetime, do baterista Tony Williams e depois com Miles Davis em seus álbuns de jazz fusion elétrico de 1969 até 1972: In a Silent Way, Bitches Brew, Jack Johnson, Live-Evil e On The Corner. Sua banda elétrica da década de 1970, a Mahavishnu Orchestra, apresentava um estilo musical tecnicamente virtuoso e complexo que fundia jazz elétrico e rock com influências clássicas, indianas e outras. Em 1974, ele ajudou a fundar o Shakti, uma banda seminal de fusão de rock e jazz indiano, com o violinista indiano L. Shankar e os percussionistas Zakir Hussain e Vikku Vinayakram.
O solo de McLaughlin em Miles Beyond, do seu álbum Live at Ronnie Scott's, ganhou o Grammy de Melhor Solo de Jazz Improvisado em 2018. Ele recebeu vários prêmios de "Guitarrista do Ano" e "Melhor Guitarrista de Jazz" de revistas como DownBeat e Guitar Player, com base em votações dos leitores. Em 2003, ele foi classificado em 49º lugar na lista dos " 100 Maiores Guitarristas de Todos os Tempos " da revista Rolling Stone. Em 2009, a DownBeat incluiu McLaughlin em sua lista não classificada de "75 Grandes Guitarristas", na categoria "Mestres do Jazz Moderno". Em 2012, a revista Guitar World o classificou em 63º lugar em sua lista dos 100 melhores. Em 2010, Jeff Beck chamou McLaughlin de "o melhor guitarrista vivo" e Pat Metheny também o descreveu como o maior guitarrista do mundo.
