Kool & The Gang é um grupo americano de grande sucesso formado na cidade de Jersey City no estado americano de Nova Jersey em 1964. Eles passaram por várias fases musicais em sua carreira, começaram com um som Jazz puristas, em seguida se tornou praticantes de R&B e funk, ate que chegar a Disco Music. 

Formado em 1964 pelos irmãos Robert "Kool" Bell e Ronald Bell "Khalis Bayyan" que chamaram para completar a equipe mais cinco amigos do ensino médio, Ricky West, Dennis Thomas, Charles Smith, Robert "Spike" Mickens e Woody Sparrow, assim lançando o álbum de estreia denominado Kool & The Gang em 1969. 

E com o passar do tempo foram deixando um pouco de lado o jazz, para assumir uma característica mais Funk e R&B. Até aí a banda já era muito conhecida, até que em 1973 lançam o disco Wild and Peaceful que trazia os sucessos Jungle Boogie, Funky Stuff e Hollywood Swinging. 

E no ano seguinte, veio o álbum Light of Worlds, que vinha com o sucesso Summer Madness. 

No ano de 1975, eles lançaram o disco Spirit Of The Boogie, e Ricky West deixa a banda. Chegou 1976. Eles lançam Open Sesame, que foi um sucesso, tanto que a faixa título foi para a trilha sonora de "Os Embalos de Sábado a Noite". 

E em 1978, eles querem um vocalista. E fizeram um teste com James "JT" Taylor e com Earl Toon Jr. , que foram aprovados. Chegou 1979, e eles lançam "Ladies Night" com Eumir Deodato na produção. E ano seguinte, eles lançam Celebration, outra vez com produção de Deodato. 

Em 1983, Deodato sai. E em 1985, Ricky West, ex-integrante da banda, morre de uma doença incurável.

A banda continua com sucessos durante toda a década de 80, quando, em 1988, James deixa a banda para seguir carreira solo. 

Em 1989, eles resolvem escolher três vocalistas, que são Odeen Mays Jr., Sennie "Skip" Martin e Shawn McQuiller, e lançam "Sweat", que não fez tanto sucesso. 

Em 1992, eles lançam o CD "Unite", que também foi fraco em vendas.
Até que em 1996 James finalmente volta ao K&TG, mas é somente para uma turnê do álbum "State of Affairs", do mesmo ano. E em 1999, Taylor encerra sua reunião com a banda. 

Em 2000, eles voltam. E dessa vez é para valer. Com todos os integrantes que participaram da banda, (exceto Ricky West, Robert Mickens, Woody Sparrow, Eumir Deodato e James), eles gravam um DVD com os maiores sucessos da banda no House of Blues. Em junho de 2006, Charles Smith, o co-fundador do K&TG, morre. No ano seguinte, entra um novo vocalista, Jirmad Gordone eles lançam um novo CD, "Still Kool", recheado de sucessos.

Em 2004, lançaram um álbum com regravações e algumas músicas novas. The Hits Reloaded continha colaborações com artistas como Atomic Kitten, Lisa Stansfield e Jamiroquai. O álbum alcançou o 21º lugar na parada de álbuns de R&B do Reino Unido. Em 2007, o grupo lançou outro álbum intitulado Still Kool. O álbum alcançou o 31º lugar na parada Top Soul Albums da Billboard dos EUA. Still Kool também recebeu certificação de Platina na França pela SNEP.

Em 2012, Bell aceitou o convite de David Lee Roth, vocalista do Van Halen, para que o Kool & the Gang fosse a banda de abertura da turnê A Different Kind of Truth, pois Roth havia notado que uma parcela significativa do público dos shows era composta por mulheres. Roth queria o grupo depois de vê-los se apresentarem em Glastonbury. Em 2013, o grupo lançou um álbum natalino, Kool for the Holidays . Esse foi o 24º álbum de estúdio do grupo.

Em 2015, 50 anos após a sua formação, o grupo recebeu a sua estrela na Calçada da Fama de Hollywood. Nesse mesmo ano, também foram incluídos no Hall da Fama de Nova Jersey.

Em 2016, uma rua de Jersey City foi renomeada como "Kool and the Gang Way". Durante 2019, Kool and the Gang também recebeu o Prêmio Marian Anderson. 

Em 2021, o grupo lançou Perfect Union, seu 25º álbum de estúdio e primeiro álbum de material inédito em 14 anos. O álbum foi produzido por Khalis Bayyan antes de sua morte em 2020. 

Em 20 de novembro de 2022, o grupo realizou um concerto ao vivo especial na cerimónia de nomeação do recém-batizado Carnival Celebration, apresentando “ Celebration ” como uma homenagem a mais recente adição à frota da Carnival.

O Kool & the Gang foi selecionado para indução ao Rock and Roll Hall of Fame em abril de 2024. Eles foram oficialmente introduzidos pelo rapper Chuck D (do Public Enemy) na cerimônia em outubro. A banda, acompanhada pelo The Roots, reuniu-se com o ex-vocalista James "JT" Taylor na cerimônia de introdução e apresentou um medley de seus sucessos, incluindo "Get Down on it", "Jungle Boogie", "Hollywood Swinging", "Ladies' Night" e "Celebration".
