Little Richard - Collection.

Richard Wayne Penniman (Macon, 5 de Dezembro de 1932 - 9 de maio de 2020) mais conhecido por Little Richard, foi um cantor, compositor e pianista dos Estados Unidos. Foi eleito pela Rolling Stone o 8º maior artista da música de todos os tempos.

Em sua infância, na Geórgia, Little Richard cresceu ouvindo cantores arrebatados de gospel nas igrejas negras e isto influenciou seu modo de cantar. Aprendeu a tocar piano na adolescência e se tornaria um dos desbravadores do rock, misturando boogie-woogie, Rhythm & Blues e música gospel, criando um estilo único: uma música agressiva, vibrante, intensa, tocada acelerada ao piano.

Começou a gravar em 1955, estourando nas paradas com a música "Tutti Frutti" (gravada também por Elvis Presley). Seguiram-se hits como "Lucille", "Keep A Knockin" (cuja introdução de bateria influenciou o Led Zeppelin na música "Rock & Roll"2 ), "Long Tall Sally", "Rip it up", "Jenny Jenny" entre outros. Little Richard teria injetado funk no rock and roll durante este período, através dos saxofones de sua banda The Upsetters, em meados da década de 1950, influenciando bastante desenvolvimento desse gênero musical.3 Richard tornou-se um astro, mas era atormentado por questões religiosas ligadas à sua bissexualidade, pois cresceu numa cultura cristã e conservadora. Por fim, em 1958, largou a carreira após uma excursão a Austrália para dedicar-se à religião. Tornou-se pastor e gravou canções gospel. Em 1962, entretanto, voltou aos palcos em uma turnê com shows de abertura dos Beatles e do Rolling Stones.

O interesse da cultura pop britânica pelos pioneiros do rock americano fez com que realizasse diversos shows em clubes ingleses, ao longo dos anos 60, sempre interpretando seus grandes sucessos. Também na América, buscou revitalizar sua carreira gravando canções de padrão soul, mas sempre foi mais reconhecido pelo seu repertório de seus anos iniciais. Nos anos 70, embora sempre respeitado por seu pioneirismo, dedicou-se mais a eventos nostálgicos celebrando as "origens" do rock' roll do que a uma carreira artística efetiva, gravando poucas canções inéditas.

Biografia.

Infância.

Nascido Richard Wayne Penniman em Macon, Georgia, terceiro de 12 filhos de Charles "Bud" Penniman, um fabricante clandestino de bebidas alcoólicas, e Leva Mae. Cresceu em uma família religiosa na qual cantar fazia parte integral de suas vidas, eles se apresentavam em igrejas locais como "The Penniman Singers", e chegaram a entrar em competições com outras famílias cantoras. Sua família o chamava de "War Hawk" (br: Falcão de Guerra) por causa de sua maneira de cantar alto e gritado. Seu avô, Walter Penniman, era um pastor, e os pais de sua família eram membros da fundação templária "African Methodist Episcopal" (AME) na igreja de Macon. Sua avó materna era membro do "Macon's Holiness Temple Baptist Church". Ele frequentava a "New Hope Baptist Church" em Macon com sua mãe. As preferidas de Richard eram as igrejas pentecostais por causa da música e a diversão que tinha fazendo a dança sagrada e fazendo glossolalia com os membros da congregação.

Quando tinha dez anos se tornou um curador pela fé, cantando músicas gospel e tocando nas pessoas, que testemunhavam que sentiam melhor após a prática. Inspirado pelo Irmão Joe May, um cantor evangelista conhecido como "The Thunderbolt of the West" (br: "Raio trovejante do oeste"), Richar queria ser um pastor.

O fraseado dramático e mudanças rápidas de voz de Richard são derivadas dos artistas negros de gospel dos anos 30 e 40. Ele disse que Sister Rosetta Tharpe era sua cantora preferida na infância. Ela convidou ele para cantar uma música no palco do auditoria da cidade de Macon em 1945, depois de ouvir ele cantando antes do show. A plateia aplaudiu com entusiasmo e ela pagou a ele uma quantidade de dinheiro que ele nunca havia visto na vida. Também foi influenciado por Mahalia Jackson, Brother Joe May e Marion Williams de quem ele pegou a marca registrada "whoooo" em seus vocais. Seu visual e som foram inspirados no estilo gospel e jump blues do final dos anos 40 do cantor Billy Wright conhecido como "Principe do Blues". Billy apresentou Richard ao DJ Zenas Sears, que conseguiu para o novato seu primeiro contrato de gravação em 1951.

Uma das principais influências de Richard ao tocar piano foi Esquerita (Eskew Reeder, Jr.), que mostrou a ele como tocar notas altas sem comprometer o baixo. Richard conheceu Esquerita quando viajou por Macon com uma pastora chamada Irmã Rosa.

Richard vivia em uma vizinhança negra, ele tinha algum contato com brancos, mas devido à segregação racial ele não podia cruzar a linha para onde os brancos viviam. Enquanto estava no colegial, Richard tocou saxofone na banda da escola. Começou a perder o interesse na escola e tocar em várias bandas itinerantes durante sua adolescência. Aos 14 anos se juntou ao show do intérprete Sugarfoot Sam do Alabama, onde aparecia vestido de mulher e era chamado de "Princesa Lavonne - A excentricidade do ano".

Em outubro de 1951, Richard começou suas gravações de jump blues pela RCA Camden. Em 1952 enquanto Richard estava em uma de suas gravações, seu pai levou um tiro e morreu, o assassino foi preso mas pouco tempo depois as acusações acabaram sendo retiradas. Com as vendas pobres de suas primeiras gravações e seu pai morto, Richard foi forçado a trabalhar como lavador de pratos em Macon.

Suas próximas gravações com a Peacock Records em 1953 não estavam satisfazendo Richard com sua carreira solo, ele então formou uma nova banda de R&B chamada "The Upsetters". A banda começou com o baterista de Nova Orleans Charles "Chuck" Connors e dois saxofonistas, incluindo Wilbert "Lee Diamond" Smith. Em 1955 se juntaram à banda os saxofonistas Clifford "Gene" Burks e Grady Gaines, o guitarrista Nathaniel "Buster" Douglas e o baixista Olsie "Baysee" Robinson.

Como sugestão de Lloyd Price, Richard gravou uma demo para o selo gospel/R&B Specialty Records em 9 de fevereiro de 1955. O dono da Specialty, Art Rupe, o emprestou dinheiro para comprar seu contrato da Peacock Records e colocar sua carreira nas mãos de Robert "Bumps" Blackwell da Specialty A&R.

Rupe e BlackWell primeiramente enxergavam Richard como sendo um rival comercial de Ray Charles, que estava experimentando sucesso pela Atlantic Records cantando músicas gospel e desenvolvendo músicas com uma batida blues. Richard disse à Rupe que gostava do som de Fats Domino, então Rupe e Blackwell reservaram o estúdio de gravação J&M de Cosimo Matassa em Nova Orleans, e contrataram músicos de estúdio que haviam trabalhado com Fats Domino (incluindo Earl Palmer na bateria e Lee Allen no sax) que logo depois se tornaram músicos da banda de Richard durante turnês nos meio dos anos 50.

Após seguidas gravações que não agradaram Blackwell, Richard começou a espancar no piano um ritmo boogie woogie e gritar a improvisadamente "Tutti Frutti", uma música que ele havia escrito e apresentado no palco durante anos. Blackwell estava tão impressionado com aquele som que fez Richard gravar a música. No entanto, para deixar a música comercialmente aceitável, Richard teve que reescrever a letra. Blackwell achou que a letra com humor homossexual e modos de menestrel precisavam ser limpos.16 Por exemplo, "Tutti Frutti, good booty" foi substituído por "Tutti Futti, aw-rooty". A música já tinha a introdução a capela "A-wop-bop-a-loo-lop-a-lop-bam-boom!" que também foi ligeiramente alterada para ficar comercialmente aceitável. A gravação foi lançada pela Specialty em outubro de 1955.
