Magnum é uma banda de rock formada em 1972 na cidade de Birmingham na Inglaterra, às vezes enquadrada no subgênero “prog related” devido à fusão prog/hard/AOR em suas canções, similar ao estilo adotado por bandas como Uriah Heep, Asia, Argent, etc... Sua formação clássica foi composta por Bob Catley (vocais), Tony Clarkin (guitarra), Gorin Kex (bateria) e Bob Doyle (baixo). Apesar de sofrer várias mudanças ao longo dos anos, o núcleo em torno de Catley e Clarkin sempre permaneceu.
Começou como a “banda da casa” no famoso clube noturno “Rum Runner” de Birmingham (mais tarde a casa da banda Duran Duran). A formação principal da banda se manteve até 1972, quando Les Kitcheridge juntou-se a eles, temporariamente na guitarra. Bob Doyle deixou a banda em 1972 e juntou-se ao “Wizzard” de Roy Wood, sendo substituído pelo ex-baixista da banda “Uglys And Balls”, Dave Morgan (que mais tarde seria um membro da banda ELO).
Seu sucesso mais notável durante os primeiros anos foi o álbum “Chasing The Dragon”, lançado em 1982, alcançando a posição nº 17 no UK Chart Album e que incluiu várias músicas que seriam pilares de suas apresentações ao vivo, notavelmente "Soldier Of The Line," "Sacred Hour" e "The Spirit".
Sua descoberta junto ao grande público deu-se em 1985 com o álbum “On A Storyteller’s Night”, que contou com o single "Just Like An Arrow". Esse sucesso continuou nos anos seguintes com Roger Taylor (baterista da banda Queen) produzindo “Vigilante” em 1986, com o álbum Top 5 “Wings Of Heaven” em 1988, que contou com três singles no Top 40 e o álbum produzido por Keith Olsen, “Goodnight L.A.” que alcançou a posição nº 9 no UK Album Chart em 1990.
Em 1995, Clarkin anunciou a dissolução da banda, formando mais tarde outra com Catley e Al Barrow chamada “Hard Rain“. No entanto, essa nova banda enfrentou dificuldades para se enquadrar no cenário musical da época, o que gerou discussões em torno da viabilidade do novo projeto. Ao mesmo tempo, foi se tornando cada vez mais evidente o foco de Catley em sua carreira solo, deixando o “Hard Rain” em segundo plano. Isso acabou por marcar o fim de sua relação de trabalho com Clarkin, iniciada em 1972. Depois de um período de silêncio, Clarkin finalmente dissolveu o “Hard Rain” em 2001.
Em 2002, Clarkin e Catley resolveram reformar a banda Magnum, lançando o álbum “Breath Of Life” com uma turnê pelo Reino Unido em Dezembro. O álbum consistia em parte de músicas originalmente escritas para o Hard Rain; de acordo com Catley, era uma mistura de Magnum e Hard Rain. Eles gravaram o álbum sem baterista, antes de contratar o baterista do Thunder, Harry James, para completar a formação. A banda então fez uma turnê pelo Reino Unido em dezembro. O próximo álbum, Brand New Morning, foi lançado em 2004. Este álbum representou uma mudança definitiva em relação ao estilo de Hard Rain; anos depois, Catley comentaria que "Brand New Morning realmente foi o primeiro álbum novo do Magnum". O Magnum então se apresentou no Bang Your Head Festival na Alemanha e no Lorca Rock Festival na Espanha e fez uma turnê pelo Reino Unido e Europa em dezembro. Clarkin comentou:
A banda fez uma turnê em abril de 2005 para comemorar o 20º aniversário de On a Storyteller's Night; eles lançaram um DVD ao vivo do show em Astoria intitulado Livin' the Dream, que também incluía um pequeno documentário e vídeos promocionais de toda a história da banda.
O Magnum concluiu o trabalho para um novo álbum de estúdio, Princess Alice and the Broken Arrow, que foi lançado em 26 de março de 2007; isso também marcou o retorno das artes das capas de Rodney Matthews, ausente desde 1992. O álbum entrou na parada de álbuns do Reino Unido na posição 70, a primeira vez que o Magnum entrou nas paradas do Reino Unido desde 1994. Também alcançou a posição 4 na parada de álbuns de rock da BBC e a posição 60 na Alemanha. O Magnum fez uma turnê pelo Reino Unido e Europa em maio de 2007. Harry James tocou bateria temporariamente durante metade da turnê, pois Jimmy Copley havia adoecido e logo substituiu Copley permanentemente na formação. Copley morreu em 2017.
Em 2005, o ex-baterista Kex Gorin foi diagnosticado com câncer renal. Gorin teve um rim removido e passou por radioterapia e tratamento com esteroides, mas morreu da doença em 21 de dezembro de 2007. Em 2007, o Magnum fez um show único no Robin 2 em Bilston, Wolverhampton. Este foi um evento beneficente em prol da família do ex-baterista Kex Gorin. Um leilão de memorabilia antes do show arrecadou mais de £ 10.000. O Magnum então tocou um set de duas horas com material antigo e novo. O Magnum realizou uma turnê pelo Reino Unido comemorando o 20º aniversário de Wings of Heaven em novembro de 2007. Esses shows foram gravados para o álbum Wings of Heaven Live, que foi lançado em março de 2008. O álbum foi dedicado a Kex Gorin.
Em 15 de junho de 2009, o Magnum lançou Into the Valley of the Moonking pela SPV. Estilisticamente, o álbum foi considerado uma continuação lógica de Princess Alice e se tornou o primeiro lançamento do Magnum a entrar nas paradas da Suíça desde Rock Art. Alguns meses depois, a banda lançou The Gathering, pela Universal / Sanctuary; sua primeira coletânea abrangendo toda a carreira, distribuída em cinco discos, incluindo uma gravação ao vivo de 1988 no Hammersmith Odeon. O próximo álbum de estúdio, The Visitation, foi lançado em janeiro de 2011 e era notavelmente mais roqueiro do que os lançamentos anteriores. A banda fez uma turnê para promover o álbum, que alcançou a 55ª posição no Reino Unido e a 19ª na Alemanha, durante março e abril de 2011.
A banda lançou seu 17º álbum de estúdio, On the 13th Day, em setembro de 2012. "So Let It Rain" foi o primeiro single, lançado em agosto de 2012 pela Steamhammer / SPV. A banda fez uma turnê pela Europa para promover o álbum no final de 2012, que entrou nas paradas de muitos países europeus, incluindo o Reino Unido, onde alcançou a 43ª posição. Logo após o lançamento e a turnê de On the 13th Day, o Magnum revelou que Clarkin estava de volta ao estúdio compondo e gravando novas músicas. O novo álbum, intitulado Escape from the Shadow Garden, também contaria com a arte de Rodney Matthews, desta vez mostrando semelhanças com os primeiros álbuns do Magnum, Chase the Dragon (a árvore) e On a Storyteller's Night (o contador de histórias), juntamente com elementos de álbuns mais recentes, como On the 13th Day. Escape From the Shadow Garden foi lançado na Escandinávia em 19 de março de 2014 e em 21 de março na Alemanha, Áustria e Suíça, 24 de março no resto da Europa e 1º de abril nos EUA e Canadá. Assim como em On the 13th Day, a banda recebeu seus fãs em uma festa de lançamento do álbum realizada no Robin 2 em Bilston em 25 de março de 2014, um dia após o lançamento no Reino Unido. Comparado com os lançamentos de álbuns do Magnum desde a sua reformulação, foi um sucesso comercial, alcançando o 14º lugar na parada de álbuns alemã, o 19º na parada de álbuns sueca, o 22º na parada de álbuns suíça e o 38º na parada de álbuns do Reino Unido, uma posição alcançada pela última vez pelo Magnum com The Eleventh Hour! em 1983. Também alcançou o segundo lugar na parada de álbuns de rock do Reino Unido. O álbum foi seguido por uma turnê europeia, durante a qual o álbum ao vivo Escape from the Shadow Garden – Live 2014 foi gravado. Foi lançado em maio de 2015.
Em fevereiro de 2016, o Magnum lançou o álbum Sacred Blood "Divine" Lies, com 10 faixas inéditas que consolidaram o som característico da banda. Com a colaboração de Rodney Matthews na arte da capa, o lançamento incluiu vídeos e faixas bônus. O álbum foi seguido por uma turnê de 33 datas na Europa, Reino Unido e Irlanda, e posteriormente por uma turnê de inverno com apresentações em algumas casas de shows no Reino Unido e na Irlanda. Mais tarde naquele ano, a filha de Clarkin sugeriu uma coletânea de baladas. Clarkin gostou da ideia e após a aprovação da SPV, o Magnum começou a trabalhar na compilação. O processo acabou sendo mais longo do que o previsto. Muitas músicas passaram por um extenso tratamento de remixagem, remasterização e até mesmo regravação completa. O novo álbum de baladas, intitulado The Valley of Tears – The Ballads, foi lançado em 6 de janeiro de 2017.
Em dezembro de 2016, Mark Stanway deixou a banda no meio de uma turnê, devido ao que ele chamou de "circunstâncias irrevogáveis". Ele foi substituído pelo músico de estúdio de West Midlands, Rick Benton, que fez sua primeira apresentação ao vivo em Wolverhampton em 2016. Benton foi oficialmente anunciado como membro permanente em janeiro de 2017. Alguns meses depois, devido a conflitos de agenda, o ex -baterista do Paradise Lost, Lee Morris, substituiu Harry James como baterista da banda. Com essa nova formação, a banda começou a gravar seu próximo álbum em fevereiro de 2017. Lost on the Road to Eternity foi lançado em janeiro de 2018, e a banda embarcou em uma turnê, que resultou no álbum ao vivo Live at the Symphony Hall em janeiro de 2019.
Em 25 de junho de 2019, o baixista Al Barrow anunciou sua saída da banda devido às dificuldades em passar muito tempo longe de sua casa nos Estados Unidos. Dennis Ward foi anunciado como o novo membro. The Serpent Rings, o 21º álbum de estúdio da banda, foi lançado em janeiro de 2020. Quando questionado sobre o futuro, Clarkin afirmou que o Magnum tinha mais dois álbuns de estúdio assinados com a gravadora e que a banda não tinha planos de se aposentar. Uma turnê estava agendada para a primavera, mas teve que ser adiada devido à pandemia de COVID-19. A banda retornou ao estúdio e um álbum de compilação remasterizado intitulado Dance of the Black Tattoo foi lançado em janeiro de 2021. Seu 22º álbum de estúdio, The Monster Roars, foi lançado em 14 de janeiro de 2022.
Em 9 de janeiro de 2024, o Magnum anunciou em sua página do Facebook que Clarkin havia falecido pacificamente em 7 de janeiro, cercado por sua família, após uma breve doença. No mês anterior, a banda revelou que ele havia sido diagnosticado com uma rara doença na coluna, o que levou ao cancelamento de sua turnê em 2024. Here Comes the Rain, o 23º álbum de estúdio do Magnum, foi lançado cinco dias após a morte de Clarkin e alcançou posições nas paradas musicais sem precedentes na história da banda. Dois meses após o lançamento, Catley disse que não poderia continuar sem Clarkin e que o Magnum se dissolveria.
Após passar grande parte do verão em turnê com o Avantasia, Catley anunciou em setembro que haveria uma série de shows em homenagem a Clarkin em janeiro de 2025, intitulada A Passage in Time, A Tribute to Tony Clarkin. Brendon Riley, ex-técnico de guitarra de Clarkin, foi anunciado como o guitarrista principal da banda para as datas. Uma gravação ao vivo de dezembro de 2022 foi lançada em janeiro de 2025 como um álbum ao vivo intitulado Live At KK's Steel Mill. Esta é a última gravação ao vivo oficial com Tony Clarkin. Em setembro de 2025, foi anunciado que a banda lançara um novo álbum de estúdio em 2026, baseado em músicas inéditas escritas e interpretadas por Clarkin.
