Mungo Jerry (anteriormente conhecida como Mungo Jerry Blues Band) é uma banda britânica de rock formada por Ray Dorset em Ashford, Middlesex, em 1970. Vivenciando seu maior sucesso no início da década de 1970, com uma formação variável sempre liderada por Dorset, o maior sucesso do grupo foi " In the Summertime ", que vendeu entre 8 e 16 milhões de cópias em todo o mundo. Eles tiveram nove singles nas paradas do Reino Unido, incluindo dois números um, cinco hits no top 20 na África do Sul e quatro no Top 100 no Canadá.
Mungo Jerry ganhou destaque em 1970 após suas apresentações no Hollywood Music Festival em Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, nos dias 23 e 24 de maio, que foram seus primeiros shows sob esse nome, inspirado no poema " Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer " de Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, de T.S. Eliot. Eles se apresentaram ao lado de Black Sabbath, Traffic, Ginger Baker's Air Force, Grateful Dead e José Feliciano. Seu show de 23 de maio foi bem recebido e os organizadores os convidaram para se apresentarem novamente no dia seguinte. O primeiro single da banda, "In the Summertime", o primeiro maxi single do mundo, lançado em 22 de maio, entrou nas paradas do Reino Unido no nº 13 e na semana seguinte foi direto para o nº 1. Ray Dorset e Colin Earl já haviam sido membros do The Good Earth. O baixista Dave Hutchins saiu para se juntar à banda de Bobby Parker e o baterista foi demitido, então Dorset e Earl decidiram cumprir o único show restante, um baile de Natal da Universidade de Oxford em dezembro de 1968, como um trio com Joe Rush, um dos colegas de Dorset, no contrabaixo. Também se apresentou Miller Anderson, fazendo sua estreia como cantor e guitarrista e Mick Farren and the Social Deviants. Após a saída de Rush, Mike Cole foi recrutado para tocar contrabaixo, e essa formação gravou as primeiras dezessete faixas do Mungo Jerry, que compuseram o primeiro álbum e o maxi-single, incluindo "In the Summertime". Quando fizeram sua estreia nacional no Hollywood Festival, Rush se juntou a eles no palco para tocar washboard em algumas músicas. A banda Mungo Jerry fez sua primeira viagem aos Estados Unidos em setembro de 1970. Em seu retorno, Mike Cole foi demitido e substituído por John Godfrey, que tocou baixo em seu segundo maxi-single no Reino Unido, " Baby Jump ", que também alcançou o topo das paradas britânicas em março de 1971. O terceiro single no Reino Unido, outro maxi-single, " Lady Rose ", também lançado em 1971, estava prestes a se tornar outro sucesso número 1, mas foi temporariamente retirado de circulação por ordem do Ministério Público. Isso ocorreu devido a reclamações sobre a inclusão da canção tradicional " Have a Whiff on Me " (à qual Dorset havia adicionado alguns versos próprios), sob a alegação de que ela fazia apologia ao uso de cocaína. O maxi-single foi então relançado com "She Rowed" no lugar da canção em questão.
Com o tempo, Dorset achou o repertório de blues e jug band do grupo restritivo e em 1972, lançou um álbum solo, Cold Blue Excursion, com suas músicas acompanhadas por cordas, metais e em uma faixa, por uma banda de jazz. Sua intenção de ampliar o apelo do grupo recrutando um baterista levou King e Earl a tentarem demiti-lo, mas a gerência, considerando Dorset inseparável de Mungo Jerry aos olhos do público, demitiu ambos. Dorset e Godfrey, o baixista, recrutaram novos membros e apresentaram um novo som, ouvido no quarto álbum, Boot Power. Colin Earl e Paul King formaram a The King Earl Boogie Band e gravaram um álbum no Manor Studio de Richard Branson chamado Trouble at Mill, produzido por Dave Cousins, do Strawbs. O single "Plastic Jesus", lançado em junho de 1972, foi banido pela BBC. Eles tocaram juntos de vez em quando nos anos seguintes e acabaram formando uma banda chamada Skeleton Crew.
Os sucessos de Mungo Jerry continuaram até 1976 com "Open Up" (Top 20 na Europa); " Alright, Alright, Alright " (uma regravação de um antigo sucesso francês para Jacques Dutronc e novamente um grande sucesso mundial, alcançando o Top 3 no Reino Unido); "Wild Love"; "Long-Legged Woman Dressed in Black", "Hello Nadine" (sucesso europeu e Top 5 no Canadá) e "It's a Secret" (sucesso europeu). " You Don't Have to Be in the Army to Fight in the War " deu a Mungo Jerry mais um sucesso.
Em 1975, Earl voltou a tocar teclados, o baterista Peter Sullivan juntou-se à banda e o percussionista Joe Rush, que havia sido membro ocasional nos primeiros tempos, também retornou por um período. A formação do grupo continuou a mudar. Entre os músicos que tocaram com eles estão o baixista Bob Daisley, os bateristas Dave Bidwell, Paul Hancox e Boris Williams, o guitarrista Dick Middleton, o tecladista Sev Lewkowicz e o tecladista/acordeonista Steve Jones. Em 1980, outra canção de Dorset, " Feels Like I'm in Love ", originalmente escrita para Elvis Presley e gravada pela banda como lado B de um single, tornou-se um sucesso número um no Reino Unido na voz de Kelly Marie. Eles continuaram a ter sucesso com hits internacionais como "On a Night Like This", " Knockin' on Heaven's Door " (uma versão reggae da música de Bob Dylan) e "Sunshine Reggae" (versão britânica de Mungo Jerry & Horizon).
Em 1983, Dorset fez parte do supergrupo de blues Katmandu =, que gravou o álbum A Case for the Blues, com o guitarrista Peter Green, ex- Fleetwood Mac e o tecladista Vincent Crane, ex- Atomic Rooster e The Crazy World of Arthur Brown.
O tecladista original, Colin Earl faleceu em fevereiro de 2025, aos 82 anos, após uma breve doença. Colin era conhecido por seu estilo enérgico de tocar piano boogie-woogie, que se destacou no maior sucesso da banda, "In the Summertime".
