Muitas vezes ligada aos mais famosos nomes do folk rock épico, a banda Pentangle representa uma das anomalias musicais mais fascinantes que fizeram sucesso na Grã-Bretanha nos anos setenta. A liderança do quinteto em sua formação histórica, .que sempre usou uma instrumentação estritamente acústica, certamente foi levada por seus dois guitarristas, Bert Jansch e John Renbourn. Ambos haviam crescidos à sombra da grande figura de Davey Graham, e, como ele, foram depois reconhecidos como os expoentes da maior escola do violão inglês, em oposição aos EUA, liderados por John Fahey, Robbie Basho e Leo Kottke.
Jansch e Renbourn levaram ao Pentangle seu amor comum pelo blues, música popular americana, a tradicional britânica e uma propensão temível para a experimentação de novos horizontes expressivos que já haviam levado a um trabalho duo muito meritório como 'Bert & John' em 1966, para a gravadora Transatlantic.
Além de folclore, na música do Pentangle encontramos como referências inspiradoras, as paixões de John Renbourn por música medieval e renascentista, que seriam sempre constantes em seu trabalho solo posteriormente, as raízes jazzísticas do baixista Danny Thompson, que aos vinte e um que já era um dos músicos mais populares de câmera anglo-saxônica, do percussionista Terry Cox e até mesmo toques orientais e étnicos.
No refinamento constante de uma concepção global madura desde a sua criação, Pentangle lançou seis excelentes álbuns entre 1978 e 1983, que, juntamente com um material popular tradicional levantado com respeito e delicadeza, trazia composições próprias de uma veia mais impetuosa e experimental: 'The Pentangle', 'Sweet Child', 'Basket of Tight', 'Reflection', 'Solomon’s Seal e 'Cruel Sister'. Exaustos por causa de tanto trabalho que os impedia, especialmente Jansch e Renbourn, continuar em carreira solo paralela, separam-se amigavelmente.
Renbourn garantiu uma continuidade ideal para a experiência de Pentangle formando John Renbourn Group, que incorpora a voz magnífica de Jacqui McShee, em dois discos lançados também pela Transatlantic em 1977 e 1980, 'A Maid in Bedlam' e 'Enchanted Garden', sendo seguidos por um álbum duplo ao vivo, “Live in America” pela gravadora Flying Fish. Em 1983 ele participa da reconstrução do grupo, patrocinado e financiado pelo promotor Claudio Trotta, compartilhando a princípio a intenção de seus ex-colegas para retomar a colaboração no mesmo lugar em que foi interrompido e assim evitando a tentação de retornar ao antigo repertório em uma "operação nostálgica", no qual o sucesso e muitos conjuntos tinham caído após uma longa ausência. Mas no momento da passagem dos fatos, Renbourn, muito popular após a sua associação com o guitarrista americano Stephan Grossman, que tinha se consagrado entre os mestres da música da guitarra contemporânea, preferiu se aposentar. A Jansch e os outros não restou outro remédio, além de ficarem bem chateados e chamarem Mike Piggott para substituição e gravar com ele "Open The Door", o álbum do grande retorno.
A escolha não foi errada, porque Piggott, alternando violino e guitarra, ampliou o potencial musical da formação, evitando comparações entre o presente e o passado. Após esta primeira gravação, o então reformado Pentangle sofre a saída de Danny Thompson, que depois de fazer apoio a nomes famosos do jazz e rock (Sonny Rollins, John Williams, Elvis Costello, Eric Clapton), criou o seu próprio trio. Com a inclusão de Nigel Portman Smith, tecladista além de baixista, o Pentangle aparece novamente projetad sobre uma segunda temporada artística fértil dos anos 90s.
Esta formação, composta por Jansch, McShee, Portman Smith, Kirtley e Conway, durou quase tanto quanto a formação original e gravou três álbuns: "Think of Tomorrow", "One More Road” e “Live 1994”. Ele completou a sua última turnê em março e abril de 1995, e após isso, Jansch deixou o grupo para seguir carreira solo.
Em 1995, Jacqui McShee formou um trio com Conway na percussão e Spencer Cozens nos teclados. O primeiro álbum do trio era "About Thyme", com as participações de Ralph McTell, Albert Lee, Mike Manieri e John Martyn. O álbum chegou ao topo do ranking da revista britânica Roots. O álbum foi lançado em seu próprio selo, GJS. A nova formação tocou regularmente em circuitos locais. Seu concerto no Chipping Norton (Oxfordshire) foi gravado e lançado pela gravadora Park Records sob o título “At The Little Teatro ‘“. O álbum destaca o virtuosismo da improvisação da banda e sua mistura de jazz e folk.
Em agosto de 2002, o saxofonista Jerry Underwood faleceu de uma enfermidade. Seu lugar foi tomado por Gary Foote, em 2004. Este novo Pentangle continuou a fazer turnês em 2006 e datas de shows do grupo foram anunciados no Reino Unido e na Europa.
A formação original do Pentangle reuniu-se em 2008 e apareceu no programa musical da BBC, Later... with Jools Holland, em 29 de Abril de 2008, interpretando " Let No Man Steal Your Thyme "; e em 2 de maio de 2008, apresentando "Light Flight" e "I've Got a Feeling". Realizaram uma digressão pelo Reino Unido nesse ano, que incluiu uma atuação no Royal Festival Hall, onde tinham gravado o seu álbum Sweet Child quarenta anos antes, e foram cabeças de cartaz do Green Man Festival, no País de Gales, em agosto. Um álbum duplo ao vivo em CD, Finale - An Evening with Pentangle, contendo 21 canções gravadas durante a digressão de 2008, foi lançado pela Topic Records em outubro de 2016.
Em 2011, o Pentangle original realizou vários concertos, incluindo no Royal Festival Hall, Glastonbury e Cambridge. Houve atrasos para voltarem a tocar juntos porque Jansch tinha cancro da garganta, mas estavam a gravar material novo. Bert Jansch morreu vítima de cancro a 5 de outubro de 2011, aos 67 anos. John Renbourn foi encontrado morto em sua casa a 26 de março de 2015, após uma suspeita de ataque cardíaco.
