Powerwolf é uma banda alemã de power metal e heavy metal fundada em 2004 em Saarbrücken pelos integrantes do Red Aim. O grupo utiliza temas e imagens religiosas, bem como pinturas faciais cadavéricas (cadáver), composições com toques góticos e canções sobre lendas de lobisomens e vampiros. Lançaram o seu álbum de estreia, Return In Bloodred em 2005.

2004-2009: Formação e primeiros álbuns.
A banda foi formada em 2004 pelos integrantes da banda de stoner rock Red Aim. Na época os integrantes decidiram adotar pseudónimos e construir histórias de fundo em torno deles.
Oficialmente os irmãos Charles e Matthew Greywolf tocavam juntos há anos quando decidiram criar uma banda, e assim nasceram os Powerwolf. Rapidamente os irmãos acrescentaram o baterista Stéfane Funèbre e o tecladista Falk Maria Schlegel na banda, mas não conseguiram encontrar um vocalista adequado para completar a formação. Entretanto, a banda começou a compor e durante umas férias na Romênia, Charles e Matthew conheceram Attila Dorn num pub e convidaram ele para se juntar a banda. Dorn, estudante de ópera clássica na academia de Bucareste, se mudou para Saarbrücken, cidade natal da banda e se tornou o vocalista do Powerwolf. Com o amor de Dorn pelas lendas romenas de lobisomens, a banda escreveu o seu álbum de estreia, Return In Bloodred que usou essas mesmas lendas como base para muitas das letras. Após o lançamento do álbum, o Powerwolf embarcou na sua primeira turnê, intitulada Europe In Bloodred Tour.
Em 2007 lançaram o seu segundo álbum, Lupus Dei, um álbum conceitual protagonizado por um lobo como personagem principal e acompanharam o Grave Digger durante uma turnê.
Em 2008, o Powerwolf lançou o seu DVD, The Wacken Worship, o mesmo contem imagens do concerto no Wacken Open Air 2008. No mesmo ano fizeram uma turnê chamada Metal is our Mission juntamente com o Brainstorm e Pagan's Mind.
O single, Raise Your Fist, Evangelist foi lançado em 19 de março de 2009. O terceiro álbum, Bible Of The Beast, foi lançado em 24 de abril de 2009. O disco conseguiu entrar nas tabelas alemãs como o primeiro álbum da banda, atingindo a posição 76. Embarcaram numa turnê de promoção do álbum em 2010. Raise Your Fist, Evangelist foi nomeado para o prêmio metal anthem 2010 da metal hammer.
2010-2011: Mudança de baterista e Blood Of The Saints.
Em 2 de março de 2010, o baterista Stéfane Funèbre abandonou a banda e foi substituído por Tom Diener.
Em 28 de maio de 2011, a banda anunciou no seu site que Tom Diener foi substituído por um novo baterista, Roel van Helden da Holanda.
A banda lançou o single, Sanctified with Dynamite em 24 de maio de 2011 e o segundo, intitulado, We Drink Your Blood em 5 de julho de 2011 e Powerwolf gravou o seu primeiro videoclipe. As filmagens aconteceram numa antiga igreja monástica.
O quarto álbum da banda, intitulado Blood Of The Saints, foi lançado em 29 de julho de 2011 na Europa e a 2 de agosto nos Estados Unidos.
Em setembro de 2011, o Powerwolf fez uma turnê como atração principal junto das bandas, Sabaton, Grave Digger e Skull Fist.
2012-2013: Estreia com a napalm records.
Em 2012 lançaram dois álbuns. O primeiro foi o EP Wolfsnächte 2012 Tour, um EP dividido com Mystic Prophecy, Stormwarrior e Lonewolf. Este EP contou com uma faixa inédita do Powerwolf, Living on a Nightmare. Cópias deste EP foram originalmente distribuídas juntamente com a compra de bilhetes para a turnê Wolfsnächte Tour 2012, mas desde o final da turnê que estão disponíveis cópias na loja virtual do Powerwolf.
O segundo lançamento dos em 2012 foi Alive In The Night, o primeiro álbum ao vivo da banda. Contem 10 faixas e tem pouco mais de 45 minutos de duração. Foi lançado na edição de abril de 2012 da edição alemã da metal hammer.
Em 13 de agosto de 2012 a banda assinou um contrato com a napalm records e lançaram um chamado, EP The Rockhard Sacrament em 22 de junho de 2013. A banda lançou também o seu single, Amen & Attack em 28 de junho de 2013.
Preachers Of The Night foi lançado em 18 de julho de 2013. O álbum entrou nas tabelas oficiais de alemãs na posição 1.
2014-2016: Blessed & Possessed.
Em 2014 o Powerwolf lançou The History Of Heresy I e The History Of Heresy II, sendo que o segundo inclui várias versões orquestrais de músicas da banda.
Em junho do mesmo ano começaram trabalhar no seu sexto álbum. Anunciaram na página do Facebook em 5 de dezembro. Em 8 de maio de 2015, a banda lançou o seu single, Army of the Night e Armata Strigoi em 5 de junho de 2015. O seu novo álbum Blessed & Possessed foi lançado em 17 de julho de 2015. Embarcaram em uma turnê para promover o álbum em 2016.
As edições boxset e earbook do álbum inclui um CD bônus Metallum Nostrum, que contém 10 músicas de diferentes artistas que os integrantes da banda selecionaram para fazer covers, como Judas Priest, Running Wild, Savatage, Chroming Rose, Gary Moore, Ozzy Osbourne, Amon Amarth, Iron Maiden e Black Sabbath.
Lançaram o seu segundo DVD, The Metal Mass - Live, em 27 de julho de 2016 no Japão e em 29 de julho de 2016 na Europa. O álbum contém imagens ao vivo de três concertos: Masters of Rock 2015, Summer Breeze 2015 e Wolfsnächte Tour 2015, videoclips de Amen & Attack, Army of the Night, We Drink Your Blood e "Sanctified with Dynamite, um documentário do festival, A Day At Summer Breeze e um documentário da turnê, Kreuzweg - Of Wolves And Men.
2017-2019: The Sacrament Of Sin.
Em 10 de outubro de 2017, o Powerwolf anunciou no Facebook que tinham concluído a composição do seu sétimo álbum de estúdio, prometendo lançá-lo em 2018. Em janeiro de 2018, a banda entrou em estúdio para começar a gravar o álbum, previsto para o final do ano. O título do álbum foi posteriormente anunciado como The Sacrament Of Sin, que foi lançado em 20 de julho de 2018. Foi o primeiro trabalho com produção de Jens Bogren para o Powerwolf. O álbum foi bem recebido pela crítica, que destacou principalmente os novos elementos que o Powerwolf inseriu na música. O álbum obteve também sucesso comercial, alcançando o primeiro lugar nas tabelas alemãs e figurando também em várias outras tabelas. Em 14 de setembro de 2018, o álbum ganhou o prémio de melhor álbum do ano da revista alemã metal hammer.
Uma edição limitada em formato mediabook apresentava um segundo disco chamado Communio Lupatum, que continha músicas interpretadas por outros artistas selecionados pelos integrantes da banda, como Epica, Saltatio Mortis, Caliban, Battle Beast, Heaven Shall Burn, Kadavar, Kissin' Dynamite, Mille Petrozza, Marc Görtz, Amaranthe e Eluveitie.
Para promover o álbum, a banda atuou na Europa durante 2018 e 2019.
Em 11 de janeiro de 2019, relançaram o seu álbum de covers Metallum Nostrum. Em 1 de novembro de 2019, a banda lançou o single da versão reescrita e regravada de Kiss of the Cobra King.
2020 - Presente: Call Of The Wild, Interludium e Wake Up The Wicked.
Em 2020 a banda fez sua primeira turnê pela América Latina juntamente com os Amon Amarth. Tiveram que cancelar os últimos três concertos devido a pandemia de COVID-19.
Em 28 de abril de 2020, anunciaram o trabalho num novo álbum de estúdio, que foi lançado em 2021 e em 19 de janeiro de 2021, anunciaram que o seu novo álbum se chamaria Call Of The Wild. Mais tarde, em 20 de maio de 2021, foi lançada a primeira música do álbum, Beast of Gévaudan. Em 9 de junho de 2021, foi lançada uma versão regravada de Demons Are a Girl's Best Friend, com Alissa White-Gluz nos vocais. No dia 23 de junho, a banda lançou outra música do seu novo álbum, chamada Dancing with the Dead. O álbum foi lançado em 16 de julho de 2021.
Em 4 de outubro de 2022, a banda anunciou que iria realizar os seus primeiros concertos na América do Norte, em Nova Iorque e Montreal em fevereiro de 2023. Em 28 de novembro, anunciaram que o seu nono álbum de estúdio, Interludium, que foi lançado em 7 de abril de 2023. Em 4 de abril de 2024, anunciaram que o seu décimo álbum de estúdio, Wake Up The Wicked, que foi lançado em 26 de julho de 2024.
Estilo musical e letras.
O som do Powerwolf tem sido descrito principalmente como power metal e heavy metal tradicional.
O estilo musical do Powerwolf é diferente de outras bandas de power metal. Além dos instrumentos clássicos do metal, são utilizados sons de órgão e participação de um coro de igreja. A banda afirma que as suas principais influências são Black Sabbath, Mercyful Fate, Forbidden e Iron Maiden.
A língua dominante das letras é o inglês, mas também usam o latim (Werewolves of Armenia, Lupus Dei, Kreuzfeuer, Stossgebet, Sanctus Dominus e raramente o alemão (Moscow After Dark, We Take the Church by Storm, Werewolves of Armenia, Kreuzfeuer, Amen & Attack, Stossgebet, Glaubenskraft). As letras da banda caracterizam-se pelo tratamento do cristianismo e de antigas lendas romenas. No entanto, não se consideram uma banda religiosa, mas sim espiritual.
Apresentações ao vivo.
O envolvimento do público e os efeitos pirotécnicos são partes importantes dos espetáculos de Powerwolf. O vocalista Attila Dorn fala frequentemente diretamente com o público e envolve em diversas atividades, como cantar ou gritar, antes de anunciar a música seguinte.
