Robert William Cray (nascido em 1 de agosto de 1953) é um guitarrista e cantor de blues americano. Ele liderou sua própria banda e ganhou cinco prêmios Grammy.
Robert Cray em Columbus, Geórgia, enquanto seu pai estava servindo em Fort Benning. Os primeiros passos musicais de Cray remontam a época em que ele era estudante na Denbigh High School em Newport News, Virgínia. Lá ele tocou em sua primeira banda, The One-Way Street. Sua família acabou se estabelecendo na região de Tacoma, Washington. Lá ele frequentou a Lakes High School em Lakewood.
Aos 20 anos, Cray já tinha visto seus ídolos Albert Collins, Freddie King e Muddy Waters em concertos e decidiu formar sua própria banda, eles começaram a tocar em cidades universitárias na Costa Oeste. No final da década de 1970 ele morou em Eugene, Oregon, onde formou a Robert Cray Band e colaborou com Curtis Salgado no Cray-Hawks. No filme de 1978 National Lampoon's Animal House, Cray foi o baixista não creditado da banda de festa Otis Day And The Knights.
Cray lançou o álbum Who's Been Talkin' pela Tomato Records em 1980. Dois álbuns pela HighTone Records em meados da década de 1980, Bad Influence e False Accusations, tiveram sucesso moderado nos Estados Unidos e na Europa onde ele estava construindo uma reputação como artista ao vivo.
Cray assinou com a Mercury Records e em 1986, lançou seu quarto álbum Strong Persuader, produzido por Dennis Walker que recebeu um Grammy, enquanto o single crossover Smoking Gun lhe deu maior apelo e reconhecimento. Sob o pseudônimo de Night Train Clemons, ele gravou com Ted Hawkins em 1986. Ele foi convidado por Keith Richards para se juntar a banda de apoio de Chuck Berry no filme de 1987, Chuck Berry: Hail! Hail! Rock 'N' Roll, dirigido por Taylor Hackford. Em 1987, Tina Turner convidou Cray para participar de seu especial de televisão Break Every Rule.
No final da década de 1980, Cray fez abertura para grandes estrelas como Eric Clapton e lotava grandes casas de shows como artista solo. Cray geralmente toca guitarras Fender (Telecasters e Stratocasters) e existem dois modelos de Stratocaster com a assinatura de Robert Cray disponíveis na Fender. A Robert Cray Custom Shop Stratocaster é fabricada nos EUA na oficina de customização da Fender e é idêntica as guitarras que Cray usa atualmente, enquanto a Robert Cray Standard Stratocaster é um modelo mais barato fabricado na fábrica da Fender em Ensenada, no México.
Cray teve a oportunidade de tocar ao lado de John Lee Hooker em seu álbum Boom Boom, tocando o solo de guitarra na música Same Old Blues Again. Ele também participa do álbum de Hooker, The Healer, toca um solo de guitarra na música Baby Lee. Toda a Robert Cray Band acompanha Hooker na faixa-título de seu álbum de 1992, Mr. Lucky, onde Cray toca guitarra solo, canta e interage com Hooker ao longo da música. A banda também aparece em duas músicas do álbum de duetos de BB King de 1993, Blues Summit, o dueto entre King e Cray, que foi escrito por Cray e Dennis Walker especificamente para o projeto e chamado Playin' With My Friends e o dueto entre King e John Lee Hooker (You Shook Me).
Em agosto de 1990, Cray tocou com Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Jimmie Vaughan e Stevie Ray Vaughan no Alpine Valley Music Theatre em East Troy, Wisconsin, apresentando "Sweet Home Chicago. Essa foi a última apresentação de Stevie Ray Vaughan antes de sua morte em um acidente de helicóptero naquela mesma noite.
Cray foi convidado para tocar nos concertos Guitar Legends em Sevilha, Espanha na Expo de 1992, onde tocou uma música marcante, Phone Booth. Albert Collins também estava no cartaz nesta noite de blues dos concertos Legends.
Em 2005, Cray foi introduzido no RockWalk de Hollywood no Guitar Center.
Cray continua gravando e fazendo turnês. Ele se apresentou no Crossroads Guitar Festival e acompanhou Eric Clapton em sua turnê mundial de 2006-2007.
Em 2011, Cray foi introduzido no Blues Hall of Fame e recebeu o prêmio Americana Music Lifetime Achievement Award for Performance em 2017.
