Sinner é uma banda alemã de heavy metal formada pelo vocalista e baixista Mat Sinner em 1982. Eles fizeram parte da cena alemã de heavy / speed e power metal.
Sediada em Stuttgart, lançou seu primeiro álbum, Wild'n'Evil em 1982. Esse álbum, juntamente com os dois seguintes, Fast Decision e Danger Zone, são trabalhos crus, tendo pouco em comum com o metal melódico pelo qual se tornaram conhecidos posteriormente. Após muitas mudanças de integrantes. Em 1985 a banda contratou Herman Frank do Accept e lançaram Touch of Sin. Frank saiu antes do lançamento de próximo álbum, Comin' Out em 1986, sendo substituído pelo futuro guitarrista do UDO, Mathias Dieth.
Em 1987 foi lançado Dangerous Charm, um álbum muito mais melódico do que os trabalhos anteriores, mas pouco depois disso a banda perdeu seu contrato de gravação, fez uma pausa e não se ouviu falar dela novamente por cinco anos.
Em 1990, Mat Sinner lançou um álbum solo chamado Back to the Bullet pela BMG com uma banda completamente nova. Três membros da banda de Mat Sinner reformularam o Sinner e lançaram No More Alibis em 1992, um álbum muito mais pesado do que qualquer coisa que o Sinner tivesse lançado antes. Esse vigor renovado, aliado a composições que superavam em muito os lançamentos anteriores da banda, não só continuou como se fortaleceu com Respect em 1994 e Bottom Line em 1995, este último permanecendo na parada nacional japonesa por cinco semanas. Desde a reformulação, a reputação da banda melhorou imensamente, fazendo turnês como banda de apoio para bandas como Mr. Big e Savatage, além de serem a atração principal de sua própria turnê alemã e lançarem um álbum ao vivo. O Sinner alcançaria patamares ainda mais altos, lançando dois álbuns de enorme sucesso, Judgement Day em 1997 e The Nature of Evil em 1998, antes de excursionar pela Europa como banda de apoio dos gigantes do rock Deep Purple. The Nature of Evil foi o álbum de maior sucesso da banda até então, alcançando a 63ª posição na parada de álbuns alemã.
Em 1998, Mat Sinner e Tom Naumann, que estavam com o Sinner desde a reformulação da banda em 1992, formaram o Primal Fear com o ex- vocalista do Gamma Ray, Ralf Scheepers. Mat Sinner tem sido uma força motriz tanto no Sinner quanto no Primal Fear até hoje.
Em 2000, a banda passou por sua primeira mudança de formação em cinco anos, com a saída de vários membros, incluindo o guitarrista Tom Naumann, enquanto Uli Kusch, ex- Helloween e Gamma Ray, assumiu a bateria para o álbum The End of Sanctuary. Em 2003, a formação anterior, que havia sido formada entre 1995 e 1999 se renovou e, em 20 de janeiro de 2003, lançou There Will Be Execution, antes de entrar em hiato por mais quatro anos. Nos nove anos seguintes, a banda lançou seis álbuns, provando ser seu período de maior sucesso. Esse sucesso continuaria, pois, após o lançamento de mais dois álbuns com o Primal Fear, um álbum com sua banda pré-Sinner, Goddess Shiva e uma participação especial no álbum de estreia do Tribuzy, Mat Sinner trouxe o Sinner de volta para lançar Mask of Sanity em 2007. Este álbum gerou dois singles populares, "Diary of Evil" e "Black" e incluiu uma versão fiel de "Baby Please Don't Go", do Thin Lizzy.
As vendas dos álbuns do Sinner nunca foram espetaculares: Estima-se que tenham vendido menos de 150.000 cópias de seus três primeiros lançamentos. Os álbuns, Respect e Bottom Line, lançados na década de 1990, venderam menos de 200.000 cópias combinadas e sem qualquer publicidade significativa, exceto pelo, boca a boca. O quarto álbum de estúdio, Judgement Day, recebeu críticas razoáveis, mas novamente teve pouca divulgação, já que a banda gastou a maior parte do dinheiro na gravação. Nature of Evil, lançado em 1998, provou ser o álbum de estúdio de maior sucesso da banda, com mais de 100.000 cópias vendidas, foi amplamente divulgado na internet, principalmente em sites de música alemães.
Os álbuns The End of Sanctuary e There Will Be Execution são, até o momento, os únicos álbuns do século XXI da banda que entraram na parada de álbuns alemã. Após o álbum Tequila Suicide, que alcançou o Top 50 na Alemanha, a banda fez turnês pela Europa, Japão e Austrália. Em 2019, lançaram, Santa Muerte pela AFM Records em, incluindo o primeiro single/vídeo "Fiesta Y Copas", com participação de Ronnie Romero, da banda Rainbow. Em 2022 lançaram o álbum Brotherhood.
