Spandau Ballet foi uma banda de New Wave / Blue-Eyed Soul / Synth-Pop / Sophisti-Pop & Pop Rock inglesa formada em Islington, Londres, em 1979. Inspirados pelo pós-punk underground, a banda surgiu no início da década de 1980 como a banda da casa dos Blitz Kids, tocando "European Dance Music" como "The Applause" para o público. Eles se tornaram um dos grupos de maior sucesso da era do pop britânico e fizeram parte da Segunda Invasão Britânica do Top 40 da Billboard na década de 1980, vendendo 25 milhões de álbuns e tendo 23 singles de sucesso em todo o mundo. A banda teve oito álbuns no top 10 no Reino Unido, incluindo três compilações de grandes sucessos e um álbum de material regravado. Suas influências musicais variaram de punk rock e soul até os crooners americanos de Frank Sinatra e Tony Bennett.
O guitarrista e compositor Gary Kemp e seu irmão, o baixista Martin Kemp, formaram a banda em 1979, com o baterista John Keeble, o vocalista Tony Hadley e Steve Norman, que a princípio tocava guitarra, mas que posteriormente passou para o saxofone quando a banda mudou seu estilo musical.
A banda era inicialmente chamada “The Makers”, mas mudou de nome depois de uma visita a Berlim, a inspiração veio de uma pichação que um de seus roadies viu na cidade. A banda começou a tocar e a repercutir em Londres como a banda da casa da boate Blitz, que seria creditada como o local de surgimento de um novo estilo musical dos anos 80, chamado New Romantic.
A banda eventualmente assinou com a Island Records. Depois de se afastar do movimento New Romantic, eles passaram a soar mais pop, alcançando o sucesso com o álbum True de 1983. No final de 1984, o Spandau participou da Band Aid, com Hadley ganhando destaque nos vocais, no ano seguinte eles tocaram no Wembley Stadium, em Londres, no final do Live Aid.
O grupo se separou depois do fracasso de Heart Like a Sky, em 1989. Os irmãos Kemp seguiram carreira de ator, enquanto os outros integrantes tentavam processá-los para obter uma participação no recebimento dos direitos das canções do Spandau Ballet, não conseguindo um acordo.
Os três passaram então a viajar em turnê, mas como os direitos do nome da banda também eram de Gary Kemp, eles tiveram de se apresentar com a sofrível denominação de “Hadley, Keeble e Norman, ex-Spandau Ballet”.
No início de 2009, depois de muitos boatos sobre um possível reencontro, Tony Hadley confirmou a volta da banda. Em outubro de 2009, o Spandau Ballet entrou em uma turnê mundial, com apresentações na Inglaterra, Bélgica, Holanda, Alemanha e Irlanda.
No mesmo mês, o grupo lançou um novo álbum, Once More, que apresentava versões semi-acústicas retrabalhadas de 11 sucessos do Spandau Ballet e duas músicas novas: a faixa-título, escrita por Gary Kemp e Steve Norman e Love Is All, a primeira música do Spandau Ballet escrita por Tony Hadley. O álbum recebeu Disco de Ouro na Itália e Disco de Prata no Reino Unido. A Virgin Media premiou o Spandau Ballet como o Melhor Retorno de 2009 no Virgin Media Awards.
O Spandau Ballet saiu em turnê pela Austrália em abril de 2010 com o Tears For Fears como parte de uma turnê mundial. Após um show como atração principal no Isle of Wight Festival, no mesmo cartaz que Paul McCartney, The Strokes, Jay-Z e Pink, o grupo fez seu último show no Reino Unido da Reformation Tour no Hipódromo de Newmarket em 25 de junho de 2010.
Em 2014, os cinco integrantes voltaram a tocar ao vivo em uma turnê mundial para promover um documentário aclamado pela crítica, composto exclusivamente por imagens de arquivo, sobre a história da banda e a história da cultura pop dos anos 80, Soul Boys of the Western World. A estreia mundial aconteceu no South by Southwest, com o Spandau também se apresentando como parte do festival de música, sua primeira aparição pública na América do Norte desde 1985. A banda tocou cinco músicas na estreia europeia do filme no Royal Albert Hall. Houve exibições de gala em Sydney, Hong Kong, Melbourne, Auckland e Hamburgo. O filme foi lançado nos cinemas do Reino Unido. Foi dirigido por George Hencken, produzido por Steve Dagger e Scott Milaney, com a produtora de arquivo Kate Griffiths, e incluiu imagens inéditas da banda tocando e sendo entrevistada no clube Underground de Nova York em março de 1981.
A banda embarcou em outra turnê mundial em 2015. Em janeiro de 2015, eles apareceram no The Today Show, apresentando "True". Eles também apareceram no The Talk em 27 de julho de 2015.
Em 3 de julho de 2017, Tony Hadley deixou a banda devido a circunstâncias fora do seu controle. O resto da banda divulgou a sua própria declaração explicando que Hadley tinha deixado claro em setembro de 2016 que não queria mais trabalhar com a banda.
O plano inicial era que Seal substituísse Hadley como vocalista do Spandau. De acordo com Gary Kemp, um acordo para uma turnê foi fechado com Seal, mas como a banda estava esperando que ele chegasse e começasse os ensaios, ele acabou desistindo.
Em 6 de junho de 2018, após um longo processo de audições, o Spandau Ballet revelou seu novo vocalista, Ross William Wild, que havia se apresentado anteriormente com Martin Kemp no musical Million Dollar Quartet no West End. A banda tocou ao vivo no Subterania Club, no oeste de Londres, um local onde haviam se apresentado pela última vez 40 anos antes, quando ainda se chamavam Gentry e o local era conhecido como Acklam Hall. Sua primeira música com a nova formação foi Through the Barricades.
O Spandau Ballet terminou o ano apresentando Wild com cinco shows ao vivo no exterior (Milão, Roma, Pádua, Utrecht, Tilburg) concluindo com outro no Eventim Apollo em Londres em 29 de outubro e atraiu críticas favoráveis. Fonte: Wikipédia. Site Oficial.
