Stephen Stills é um músico de folk americano mais conhecido como membro das bandas Buffalo Springfield e Crosby, Stills, Nash e Young. Em 1997, ele entrou para a história como a primeira pessoa a ser empossada no “Hall da Fama do Rock & Roll” duas vezes em uma mesma noite, tanto pela banda Buffalo Springfield, bem como pelo trio Crosby, Stills e Nash, juntamente com David Crosby e Graham Nash. Na década de 1970, Stills emergiu como um artista solo, produzindo diversos álbuns de sucesso.
Stephen Stills Arthur nasceu no dia 03 de janeiro de 1945, em Dallas, Texas. Criado em uma família militar, durante sua infância dividiu seu tempo tanto nos Estados Unidos, quanto na América Central. Já mais jovem, interessou-se por blues e música folk e após abandonar a Universidade do Estado de Louisiana no início de 1960, voltou suas atenções para uma carreira puramente musical.
Stills logo se mudou para Nova York para tentar a sorte como cantor folk, eventualmente ingressando em um grupo harmônico vocal de nove membros chamado “Au Go Go Singers”, o principal grupo a se apresentar no famoso “Café Au Go Go”, em Nova York. O grupo incluiu Richie Furay, que mais tarde se tornou colega de banda de Stills em um novo grupo.
Depois de algumas turnês durante um breve período e o lançamento de um álbum, a banda se separou em 1965. Durante este tempo, Stills também se apresentou com um grupo folk-rock chamado “The Company”, junto com o guitarrista Neil Young.
Em 1966, Stills mudou-se para o oeste, Califórnia e reuniu-se com Furay e Young para formar a banda Buffalo Springfield. A banda lançou três álbuns: Buffalo Springfield (1966), Buffalo Springfield Again (1967) e Last Time Around (1968). Infelizmente, o grupo emplacou apenas um hit nas paradas, "For What It’s Worth”, antes de se separar.
Mas Stephen Stills ressurgiu em 1968 com o álbum “Super Session”, um projeto com David Crosby, ex-membro do The Byrds. No caminho dos dois veio a cruzar Graham Nash, um ex-membro do grupo britânico The Hollies. Espantado por sua incrível harmonia vocal, o trio juntou forças para produzir um novo álbum, autointitulado, que incluiu o hit, "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" sendo no geral, um enorme sucesso.
Mais tarde nesse ano, a banda cresceu com a adição de Neil Young para formar então o supergrupo de folk rock conhecido como Crosby, Stills, Nash e Young. Com Young, o grupo marcou dois álbuns nº 1 nas paradas: Déjà vu (1970) e Four Way Street (1971).
Durante os primeiros anos da CSN & Young, Stills continuou a produzir material solo, Stephen Stills (1970) e Stephen Stills 2 (1971). Em 1972, ele se juntou à banda Manassas e lançou um álbum autointitulado no mesmo ano e outro disco em 1973 chamado Down The Road. Ele continuou a criar música solo ao longo dos próximos 30 anos, lançando álbuns como Stills (1975), Illegal Stills (1976), Thoroughfare Gap (1978), Right By You (1984) e Man Alive! (2005).
Stephen Stills foi casado três vezes e tem cinco filhos. Em 2007, anunciou-se que Stills havia sido diagnosticado com câncer de próstata e precisaria passar por uma cirurgia.
