Styx é uma banda Americana surgida na década de 1960, originalmente com o nome de Tradewinds. Após batalharem muito pelos clubes, eles conseguiram assinar um contrato com uma subsidiária da RCA em 1972, mudaram o nome para Styx e lançaram seu primeiro álbum, homônimo.
O álbum não surpreendeu mas a banda continuou a trajetória lançando dois álbuns no ano seguinte, "Styx II" e "Serpent Rising", que traz como destaque as canções "Young Man" e "Witch Wolf". Os discos deram notoriedade à banda, que pelo menos em Chicago já era bem popular. Em 74, eles soltam "Man of Miracles".
Apesar de estarem com este novo álbum, as rádios tocaram uma música de seu segundo álbum, chamada " Lady" e o álbum que havia sido lançado um ano antes começa a ser procurado nas lojas. Em 1975 ele ganha disco de ouro.
Com o sucesso, o Styx é contratado pela A&M Records e lança "Equinox", que trazia a faixa "Lorelei".
A banda sai para uma turnê, onde surgem alguns problemas e Curulewsky abandona o barco. Tommy Shaw assume o posto. Com ele a banda lança "Cristal Ball", álbum aclamado pela crítica como um dos melhores do ano, e o Styx ganha status em toda América do Norte. Além da faixa título, o destaque fica para "Put me On".
Em 1977, sai "The Grand Illusion", que alcança platina tripla em alguns meses, graças ao hit "Come sail Away".
Mais um álbum, "Pieces of Eight", e mais álbuns de platina para a banda.
Em 1979, a banda muda um pouco de direcionamento, e lança um disco cheio de baladas. Alguns fãs estranham, mas o álbum ainda é um sucesso. "Cornerstone" traz "Boat on the River" que chega ao número 1 das paradas. Neste mesmo disco é encontrada "Babe", música que fez um sucesso estrondoso no Brasil, e por lá, nem tanto.
A banda ganha a eleição de banda mais popular nos EUA e aproveita para descansar e voltar somente em 1981 com o disco "Paradise Teatre" que não traz nenhuma novidade para a banda além de mais uma platina tripla. Este disco traz as faixas "Best of Times" e "Too Much Time on My Hands".
Em 1983 a banda lança um álbum conceitual, "Kilroy was Here", que traz a música "Mr. Roboto" como carro- chefe.
Tudo demonstrava que diferente da maioria das bandas setentistas, o Styx iria ter êxito na década de 80, mas os músicos resolvem se separar, lançando antes um álbum duplo ao vivo. O Styx não fez mais nada pelo resto da década.
Dois anos depois, eles se juntam para gravar "Edge of the Century", sem Tommy Shaw, que preferiu investir no Damn Yankess, seu projeto com Ted Nugent. Com este disco eles conseguem um bom lugar nas paradas e emplacam "Show Me The Way". Apesar do retorno bem sucedido, eles pararam neste álbum. Após uma turnê bem sucedida cada um seguiu seu próprio caminho.
Mas não foi o final da banda, porque eles retornaram em 1995 para regravar a canção "Lady" que entrou nos "Greatest Hits" da banda (desta vez com Tommy Shaw). Em 96 saiu o "Greatest Hits II". E no mesmo ano do lançamento no novo CD, ocorreu no dia 16 Julho a morte do ex-guitarrista John Curulewski por hemorragia gastrointestinal aos 47 anos.
O resultado foi tão bom que em 1997 eles retomaram a banda oficialmente. Tommy, Dennis, James e Chuck se juntaram mais uma vez. Com um novo baterista chamado Todd Sucherman, eles gravaram "Return to Paradise" que era um disco de regravações.
Em 99 sai "Brave New World" com material inédito, destaque para a faixa "Number One". A banda esta na ativa e lançando discos até os dias atuais. Resenha: Antena 1.
