The Gods se tornou famosa por introduzir para o Ken Hensley, o multi compositor, talentoso que participou do principal período do Uriah Heep e depois teve uma carreira solo excelente.
Formado em 1965 por Ken Hensley e Mick Taylor (que saiu para se juntar a John Mayall, e depois aos Rolling Stones), e contando com Paul Newton. Com a ajuda do pai de Newton, o The Gods ressurgiu em 67.
Essa formação incluía, vez por outra, Lee Kerslake (que se juntou ao Uriah Heep após o terceiro álbum), Greg Lake (depois membro fundador do King Crimson e do Emerson, Lake and Palmer), e John Glasscock, que teve uma carreira de sucesso no Jethro Tull. No verão de 1968, Newton deixou The Gods para se juntar ao Spice.
Hensley ficou no The Gods até eles se separarem, em
fevereiro de 1969, ficando temporariamente sem tocar órgão e substituindo Mick
Green na guitarra na Cliff Bennet Band (na época em que a banda estava mudando o
nome para Toe Fat).
O Toe Fat tinha terminado um grande álbum escrito por
Hensley quando Newton ofereceu a ele o emprego no Spice. Era Natal de 1969, e
com a entrada de Hensley, a banda mudou seu nome para Uriah Heep por sugestão de
Gerry Bron.
