The Zombies foi formada em 1961 em St. Albans, Hertfordshire, um condado inglês, pelo tecladista Rod Argent, o baixista Paul Arnold, o guitarrista Paul Atkinson, e o baterista Hugh Grundy. Embora Arnold fosse substituído por Chris White, ele ficou mais conhecido por trazer o vocalista Colin Blunstone para a banda.
Seus primeiros singles foram populares em ambos os lados do Atlântico - “She’s Not There” (nº 12 no Reino Unido, nº 2 nos EUA) e "Tell Her No" (nº 42 no Reino Unido, nº 6 nos EUA) projetando a banda na vanguarda do movimento crescente “British Invasion”.
Em 1965, apareceram no filme de Otto Preminger “Bunny Lake Is Missing” , realizando três originais : "Nothing's Changed", " Just Out Of Reach " e "Remember You" . As três faixas podem ser encontradas na trilha sonora do filme, mixada por Paul Glass.
Em 1968, a banda lançou o que é geralmente visto como a sua obra-prima “Odessey And Oracle” - um álbum caracterizado por uma mistura de psicodelismo com melodias conduzidas por cravo, piano e cordas no estilo pop barroco. Notavelmente, esse foi o único álbum coeso da formação original, desprovido de qualquer single de pré-lançamento. Infelizmente, a banda já havia se desfeito antes do lançamento e muito antes da faixa “Time Of the Season" fosse editada pela Columbia Records como EP nos EUA, onde atingiria o terceiro lugar nas paradas da Billboard no início de 1969.
Talvez estimulado pelo sucesso “póstumo”, a banda juntou-se por um curto período em 1969, sem o vocalista Colin Blunstone. Embora cada membro da banda atuasse em projetos paralelos (talvez a banda Argent fosse o mais bem sucedido), White e Argent colaboram em várias ocasiões, principalmente no primeiro LP de Colin Blunstone “One Year”, que contava com muitas faixas consideradas escritas para um provável seguimento de “Odessey And Oracle”.
The Zombies são citados como influências de muitos grandes artistas mercuriais, como Courtney Love, Badly Drawn Boy, Paul Weller, Super Furry Animals, Magic Numbers, Billy Joel, e Arctic Monkeys. São constantemente homenageados em covers ao vivo por vários artistas como Beck e Belle & Sebastian e também lembrados em filmes e programas de TV (Querida Wendy, Tempo de Despertar, Kill Bill 2 e Os Simpsons, para citar apenas quatro...), prova de que sua música continua tão moderna e relevante hoje, como sempre foi.
Houve algumas reativações da banda desde os anos 60s, uma segunda reunião em 1990 e uma terceira reativação do nome da banda em 2004, originária da cooperação Blunstone / Argent desde 2001.
Para marcar o 40 º aniversário de lançamento de “Odessey & Oracle”, os quatro membros originais da banda participaram de uma série de três noites de concertos no Sheperd’s Bush Empire Theatre em Londres entre 7 e 9 de Março de 2008. CD e DVD foram lançados oficialmente no Reino Unido e em vários países ao redor do mundo.
Em 2010, Tom Toomey substituiu Keith Airey na guitarra e em 2011, “The Zombies featuring Colin Blunstone & Rod Argent” lançou o seu novo álbum de estúdio “Breath Out, Breath In”. As críticas foram ótimas, atingindo 4 estrelas em publicações de destaque como “Record Collector”, “Q”, “Uncut”, “Daily Mirror” e “The Independent”.
A banda continua a excursionar pelos EUA, Canadá, Holanda e no Reino Unido. Em 2011 incluíram Japão, França, Alemanha, Grécia e Israel.
A 19 de julho de 2013, foi anunciado que a banda iria participar no segundo cruzeiro anual Moody Blues, de 2 a 7 de abril de 2014 no navio de cruzeiro MSC Ship Divina.
Em 2014, os Zombies atuaram em circuitos de festivais, incluindo o Austin Psych Festival e o San Francisco Stern Grove Festival . No ano seguinte, a banda anunciou que iria embarcar numa digressão americana em 2015 do álbum Odessey and Oracle com o regresso de White e Grundy.
O sexto álbum dos The Zombies, Still Got That Hunger, produzido por Chris Potter, foi anunciado para uma data de lançamento de 9 de outubro de 2015. A gravação do álbum foi financiada com sucesso pelo serviço de crowdfunding PledgeMusic em agosto de 2014. Os The Zombies fizeram uma digressão pelos EUA no outono de 2015 para promover Still Got That Hunger e foram novamente acompanhados pelos ex-membros sobreviventes White e Grundy, juntamente com o teclista Darian Sahanaja e a mulher de White, Viv Boucherat (nos vocais de apoio) para tocar todo o álbum Odessey & Oracle.
