Transatlantic foi um supergrupo norte-americano de rock progressivo formado em 1999 pelo vocalista e tecladista Neal Morse do Spock's Beard e o baterista Mike Portnoy ex - baterista e líder da banda Dream Theater. O nome do grupo seria originalmente Second Nature, mas foi mudado após sugestão do artista Pet Nordin. O objetivo era fazer uma banda com os melhores integrantes da cena do rock e metal progressivo. Após 6 anos de inatividade (desde 2003) a banda anunciou seu retorno em 2009. 

Morse e Portnoy primeiramente desejavam incluir o guitarrista Jim Matheos (da banda Fates Warning) na formação da banda, mas como sua presença não foi possível, o guitarrista e vocalista Roine Stolt (da banda The Flower Kings) foi convidado. A formação se tornou completa com a adição do baixista e veterano do rock progressivo Pete Trewavas, da banda Marillion. 

Seu primeiro álbum SMPT:e (2000) recebeu críticas positivas, apesar de ser considerada por muitos um derivado de estilos progressivos contemporâneos. Uma turnê pelos Estados Unidos levou a um álbum duplo ao vivo, Transatlantic Live in America, e um videoclipe com o mesmo nome. A banda mostrou sua versatilidade neste álbum, apresentando covers de Beatles (Strawberry Fields Forever) e Genesis (um medley do épico Watcher of the Skies e Firth of Fifth.) 

Apesar de SMPT:e conter a obra de trinta e um minutos All of the Above, o segundo álbum de estúdio, Bridge Across Forever (2001), mostrou a banda se voltando mais para o lado do rock progressivo. Ele contém somente quatro faixas. 

A banda havia terminado após a saída de Morse para lançar uma carreira solo como cantor cristão, o que também incluiu sua saída do Spock's Beard. Um DVD ao vivo da última turnê da banda foi lançado em 2003, apresentando vários épicos do rock progressivo, além de um medley do álbum Abbey Road, dos Beatles. A versão estendida ainda conta com um cover de Shine on You Crazy Diamond, do Pink Floyd. Como bônus para os fãs de metal progressivo, Daniel Gildenlöw, da banda Pain of Salvation, participa do DVD como quinto membro da banda, tocando teclado, guitarra, percussão e vocal. 

Em 16 de abril de 2009, foi oficialmente anunciado que a banda havia se reunido e começado a trabalhar em um terceiro álbum de estúdio. O álbum foi lançado em outubro de 2009 e consistia em uma única faixa-título de 77 minutos, " The Whirlwind" . Uma edição especial do álbum também foi lançada, incluindo um segundo disco com quatro faixas originais adicionais e quatro covers. Além disso, uma edição de luxo foi lançada, que incluía um DVD documentando a produção do álbum. O álbum alcançou a 21ª posição na parada Heatseekers da Billboard americana.

A banda fez uma turnê pela América do Norte e Europa em abril e maio de 2010 para promover o álbum The Whirlwind. Apelidada de Whirld Tour, a banda contou novamente com a participação de Daniel Gildenlöw no palco.

Em fevereiro de 2013, a nova banda de Neal Morse (com Mike Portnoy) e os Flower Kings iniciaram uma turnê europeia juntos, seguida por um show em Los Angeles em maio. Cada banda apresentou um set com suas próprias músicas e o bis contou com músicas do Transatlantic interpretadas por Morse, Portnoy e Stolt, acompanhados por membros das duas bandas, com participações especiais de Jonas Reingold e Randy George se revezando no baixo. 

Em 10 de março de 2013, Pete Trewavas anunciou na Marillion Weekend Convention em Port Zélande, na Holanda, que iria para Nashville no verão para gravar novo material com o Transatlantic. Neal Morse confirmou isso ao DPRP.

Em 30 de maio de 2013, Mike Portnoy anunciou que haviam terminado de compor um novo álbum do Transatlantic. O álbum continha cinco músicas (duas épicas e três de duração normal), além de oito covers para o disco bônus. O álbum foi lançado em janeiro de 2014. O grupo seguiu em uma turnê mundial pelos Estados Unidos e Europa, incluindo uma apresentação no cruzeiro "Progressive Nation at Sea", criado por Mike Portnoy. A banda fez dois shows: o primeiro apresentou o álbum Kaleidoscope na íntegra e o segundo contou com participações especiais de artistas renomados do rock progressivo, como Jon Anderson, do Yes . Em 11 de setembro de 2014, Kaleidoscope ganhou o prêmio de Álbum do Ano na terceira edição anual do Progressive Music Awards.

Em 7 de fevereiro de 2017, a banda se apresentou no Cruise to the Edge, com Ted Leonard substituindo Roine Stolt e Bill Hubauer substituindo Daniel Gildenlöw.

Transatlantic gravou seu quinto álbum, The Absolute Universe, que foi lançado em 5 de fevereiro de 2021.

Em 5 de junho de 2021, Mike Portnoy anunciou em seu Twitter que o Transatlantic tocaria no Morsefest 2022 nos arredores de Nashville, TN, nos dias 29 e 30 de abril de 2022, como um show de aquecimento para o Cruise To The Edge. Posteriormente, foi anunciado que tanto The Absolute Universe quanto The Whirlwind seriam tocados na íntegra nesses shows.

Em 2023 e 2024, o grupo lançou dois discos ao vivo (The Final Flight: Live at L’Olympia e uma gravação de uma apresentação na Morsefest), Mike Portnoy confirmou que seriam os últimos trabalhos da banda. Fonte: Wikipédia. Site Oficial.
