Tygers of Pan Tang é uma banda inglesa de heavy metal que fez parte do movimento da nova onda do heavy metal britânico (NWOBHM). Eles se formaram em 1978 em Whitley Bay, na Inglaterra, e ficaram ativos até 1987. A banda se reformou em 1999 e continua gravando e se apresentando. O nome é derivado de Pan Tang, um arquipélago fictício na série de fantasia Elric de Melniboné, de Michael Moorcock, cujos feiticeiros mantêm tigres como animais de estimação.

O Tygers of Pan Tang foi formado pelo guitarrista Robb Weir (nascido Robert Mortimer Weir, 1958), Richard "Rocky" Laws (baixo), Jess Cox (vocal) e Brian Dick (bateria). Eles tocavam em clubes operários e assinaram contrato primeiro com o selo independente local Neat Records, antes que a MCA lhes desse um grande contrato de gravação. Após vários singles, eles lançaram seu primeiro álbum, Wild Cat, em 1980. O álbum alcançou a 18ª posição na parada de álbuns do Reino Unido na primeira semana de lançamento.
Posteriormente, John Sykes (ex-Streetfighter, mais tarde no Badlands, Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake e Blue Murder) foi adicionado como segundo guitarrista. Jess Cox teve um desentendimento com os outros e saiu, sendo substituído pelo vocalista do Persian Risk, Jon Deverill. Essa formação lançou Spellbound em 1981.
Sykes saiu após o lançamento do terceiro álbum, Crazy Nights, para fazer um teste para a banda de Ozzy Osbourne. Ele foi substituído pelo ex-guitarrista do Penetration, Fred Purser, que teve que aprender o repertório em dois dias antes de sair em turnê.
O quarto álbum do Tygers of Pan Tang, The Cage, foi lançado em 1982. A banda então teve uma disputa com a MCA, que relutava em promovê-los a menos que concordassem em gravar mais versões cover (após o sucesso da banda com "Love Potion No. 9"). A banda tentou rescindir seu contrato, mas os termos de liberação da MCA excederam o que outras gravadoras estavam dispostas a pagar para adquirir a banda. Frustrados, o grupo decidiu se separar.
Jess Cox lançou seu álbum solo Third Step em 1983. John Sykes mais tarde alcançou sucesso com Thin Lizzy e Whitesnake.
As músicas para um novo álbum foram gravadas em demo pela mesma formação que completou o álbum anterior. Ele deveria se chamar Square One. A gravadora não aprovou o material e, consequentemente, essa formação se separou. As músicas desse álbum abortado foram lançadas em 2018 sob o nome Purser Deverill.
Reformulação, 1985-1987.
Em 1985, Jon Deverill e Brian Dick reformularam a banda com Steve Lamb (ex-Sergeant) na guitarra, Neil Sheppard na guitarra e o ex-membro do Warrior e ex-Satan, Colin Irwin, no baixo. Mais tarde, Dave Donaldson substituiu Colin Irwin. Enquanto isso, Robb Weir e Jess Cox formaram a banda derivada Tyger-Tyger.
O Tygers of Pan Tang reformado lançou The Wreck-Age no verão de 1985 pela Music for Nations, e Burning in the Shade em 1987, pela Zebra Records. Burning in the Shade recebeu críticas ruins e eles se separaram novamente.
Várias coletâneas e álbuns ao vivo foram produzidos pelos dois primeiros selos da banda, Neat Records e MCA. First Kill é um desses álbuns de compilação, lançado em vinil em 1986 pela Neat Records e relançado em CD pela Castle Classics em 1992. Todas as músicas são gravações de demonstração ao vivo, sem overdubs, feitas nos estúdios Impulse em 1979/80 como demos pela formação original.
1999 - Presente.
Durante o festival Wacken Open Air de 1999, Jess Cox juntou-se ao Blitzkrieg no palco, tocando três músicas do Tygers. A resposta do público foi positiva e, um ano depois, para celebrar o 20º aniversário do Tygers of Pan Tang e o 10º Wacken Open Air, a banda foi convidada para tocar no palco principal. Brian Dick e Rocky não puderam participar, mas os Tygers (agora Jess Cox e Robb Weir, apoiados pelo guitarrista do Blitzkrieg Glenn S Howes, o baixista Gavin Gray e o baterista Chris Percy) se apresentaram. As gravações de sua apresentação resultaram no álbum Live at Wacken.
Em 2000, Robb Weir reformou a banda como o único membro original. Os outros músicos eram Tony Liddell (vocal), Dean Robertson (guitarra solo), Brian West (baixo) e Craig Ellis (bateria). Eles lançaram Mystical pela Z-Records. Fizeram turnês em vários festivais, mas acabaram sendo dispensados pela Z-Records em 2002 devido às baixas vendas de discos.
A banda passou a produzir o álbum split The Second Wave: 25 Years of NWOBHM com Girlschool e Oliver/Dawson Saxon pela Communique Records, e em 2004 lançou Noises in the Cathouse com o novo cantor Richie Wicks que, embora fosse cantor de profissão, na época ainda tocava baixo no Angel Witch.
Mais tarde naquele ano, Richie Wicks saiu e foi substituído pelo vocalista italiano Jacopo Meille. Wicks respondeu ao anúncio de Meille em que Weir criticava Wicks. Wicks respondeu a Weir em um fórum de comentários do Blabbermouth, afirmando: "Aproveitei meu tempo com a banda NA época, mas me dói ter que me defender assim. NÃO serei julgado por ninguém do TYGERS e certamente não serei rotulado como antiprofissional por pessoas que não são mais profissionais do que eu!".
Wicks mais tarde juntou-se ao Shadowkeep, aparecendo no álbum deles de 2008, The Hourglass Effect, antes de sair em 2009. Em 2010, ele era o vocalista do Heavenly Hell, uma banda tributo ao Black Sabbath da era Dio, e em 2013 começou a liderar a banda Black, White & Purple com o colega ex-guitarrista do Angel Witch, Keith Herzberg, e o atual baterista do Praying Mantis, Gary MacKenzie, junto com o ex-baixista do Shadowkeep, Mark Fielden.
Jon Deverill passou a trabalhar como ator sob o nome de Jon De Ville e, em outubro de 2007, estava atuando em The Sound of Music no London Palladium com a estrela de TV Connie Fisher.
Em outubro de 2007, a banda lançou um EP de edição limitada de cinco faixas intitulado Back and Beyond, que apresentava regravações de três músicas do Tygers do início dos anos 1980, junto com duas novas faixas retiradas de seu próximo álbum. Animal Instinct foi lançado em 19 de maio de 2008, o primeiro com o vocalista Jacopo Meille. Em 2011, o baixista Gavin Gray retornou à banda para substituir Brian West. Em 15 de julho de 2011, foi anunciado que o Tygers Of Pan Tang havia assinado um contrato com a Rocksector Records para o lançamento mundial de seu próximo álbum de estúdio, com o título provisório de "Ambush", planejado provisoriamente para fevereiro/março de 2012. O álbum saiu em 24 de setembro.
Em 2016, eles assinaram com a Mighty Music na Dinamarca, que lançou 'Tygers of Pan Tang 2016', 'Ritual', 'Bloodlines' e 'Live Blood'. Além disso, eles lançaram versões remasterizadas de 'Animal Instinct' e 'Ambush'. Uma nova mixagem de um álbum ao vivo de 1981 com John Sykes também foi lançada pela Mighty Music.
Em 2025, eles substituíram o guitarrista Francesco Marras por John Footitt. Apresentações recentes mostraram um aumento significativo no público e os Tygers retornaram ao seu reduto original em novembro de 2024 para um show no Whitley Bay Playhouse.
