O War começou como uma banda escolar de ensino médio, focada em covers de R&B e improvisações, criada pelos membros fundadores, Harold Brown e Harold E. Scott, ironicamente chamada The Creators. Em 1968, como a maioria dos membros originais foram convocados para a guerra do Vietnã, resolveram remodelar e passaram a se chamar “Nightshift”, conseguindo um trabalho como apoio da banda LA Rams, que abria os shows de Deacon Jones em um clube local. Foi nesse mesmo clube que conheceram o veterano produtor musical Jerry Goldstein, que os renomeou como War (com o propósito de chocar, mesmo) e colocou-os como banda de apoio ao ex-cantor do The Animals, Eric Burdon em seu próximo projeto solo. Para se juntar a eles, Burdon trouxe o gaitista dinamarquês Lee Oskar, que mais tarde integraria a banda.
O resultado foi o álbum "Spill The Wine", lançado em 1970, um grande sucesso que destacou a alma afro-cubana do grupo. Depois de mais um álbum com Burdon que não obteve muito sucesso devido à sua má distribuição, a banda se reagrupou autonomicamente com seu segundo álbum (lançado em 1971) rendendo dois grandes sucessos: "All Day Music" e a narrativa angustiante de insanidade "Slippin’ Into Darkness". O álbum posterior, “The World is a Ghhetto”, consolidou sua reputação de artistas do funk sócio-político, herdado de suas origens nos subúrbios de Los Angeles. A “Disco Music”, no entanto, logo apareceu para abrir o caminho para uma forma mais simplificada de música dançante, gradualmente corroendo a popularidade da banda.
