Weather Report foi o mais duradouro dos grupos de Jazz-Fusion. Atravessou a década de 70 e metade da década de 80 e definiu os rumos do estilo. Como pares igualmente famosos, Chick Corea´s Return to Forever, Herbie Hancock´s Headhunters, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Pat Metheny Group, Spyro Gyra e em meados dos anos 70s Frank Zappa e Miles Davis electric bands.
É considerada uma das bandas Jazz Fusion mais proeminentes, termo este recusado em primeiro lugar pelos seus membros. Nasceu como um verdadeiro grupo all-star, que reunia alguns dos principais nomes do jazz-rock (e do jazz de maneira geral) da época.
Co-liderado pelo Austríaco Joe Zawinul (teclados) e pelo Americano Wayne Shorter (trompete) e inicialmente pelo Checo Miroslav Vitous (contrabaixo), tomou uma abordagem incomum e inovadora de abandonar o tradicional “solista/acompanhamento”, demarcando-se do straight-ahead Jazz, e em vez disso criou oportunidades novas de improvisação, com todos os membros do grupo.
Na primeira fase, fizeram também parte os membros: McCoy Tyner (piano), Alphonse Mouzon (bateria), Don Alias (percussão) e Airto Moreira (percussão).
Nessa fase, apesar de ter um som mais cerebral e experimental, Weather Report tem sido muitas vezes visto como um “Spin-Off” do Miles Davis, dado que Zawinul e Shorter faziam ambos parte dos grupos de estúdio que gravaram os álbuns principais de Miles.
Joe Zawinul pioneiro do piano elétrico, desenvolveu consistentemente o papel do sintetizador no Jazz. Músico de peculiares improvisos melódicos (simultaneamente bebop, étnicos e pop-sound), combinados com esparsas mas rítmicas malhas ou linhas de baixo, sintetizou sempre todos os arranjos da banda, até ao fim da carreira do grupo.
Wayne Shorter, chegou ao grupo com a reputação de dar um papel dominante como instrumentista, caráter este desenhado no seu trabalho solo e nas contribuições para Miles. Em vez de tomar essa liderança, foi agregando complexidade harmônica, melódica e/ou rítmica subtilmente através de um estilo mais auditível, mas sempre desenvolvendo o papel do saxofone soprano.
Em 1973, começou a abandonar o formato de improvisação principalmente acústico e tomou uma nova direção. Principalmente por instigação de Zawinul, o Weather Report se tornou mais orientado para o Funk e o Groove e passou por contínuas reformulações na estrutura base da banda.
Entre outros, destaca-se também, Jaco Pastorius, que entrou para o grupo em 1976, trazendo consigo uma qualidade muito musical e melódica para o baixo. Com um carisma extraordinário ajudou a banda a trazer um novo público. Com Peter Erskine assumindo a bateria em 1978, ambos permaneceriam até 1982, período de maior sucesso do grupo.
A fase final vai de 1983 até 1985, com uma maior aproximação aos ritmos da chamada “World Music”. Com saída de Shorter em 1985, a banda se separou.
